We are having corned beef & cabbage this weekend.
I like the corned beef boiled with peppercorns. I cannot remember everytime we have this, do you slice the meat with the grain or against the grain?
there is a proper way to slice it so that it is tender.
I like the cabbage fried in a big skillet with a little oil, water & seasoned salt. Every bite of corned beef gets a bite of cabbage. Those two flavors work well together, for me.
Red skin potatoes boiled, drain the water & add butter & parsley.
mmm. it is good.
So how do you make yours? Any special secrets?

I cut it against the grain.
I put mine in a crock pot with the included seasonings and potatoes. I don't like cabbage, so that's out.
Nothing special here!
And my mom said only the little toe on my left foot is Irish. So you can kiss my little toe......LOL!

I have never boiled my corned beef. I have always made it in the oven with mustard and brown sugar basting sauce. My mother always boiled it with the cabbage and potatoes.
How do you fry the cabbage? Just cut it up and fry it like you would a piece of meat?

oooo. mustard & brown sugar in the oven sounds good too. I bought two brisketts maybe I will see if my wife wants to make one of them in the oven.
yah, just cut it in pieces but not too small. I keep them about the size of your computer mouse.
if you ever try to fry it, you need the BiggesT skillet, like a restaraunt size & all you do is put some oil in the bottom toss in the cabbage put a little water & season salt & put a lid on top. after the bottom fries then flip the bottom that is frying to the top & let the top fry next. it will come out a little crunchy without wilting if you dont over cook it & it smells better than boiling it.
Kind of like you would with fried potatoes, onions & squash. if I can do it any one can do it.

that is why I asked. eeeeeeewwwww to brussel sprouts!. I could never get used to them. but they are almost the same as cabbage. how did that happen?
reubens are yummy like once a year if you leave off the kraut & make it like a monte cristo.

Oh I love cabbage with corned beef.
Recipe:
Corned beef in a can
Cabbage slice one inch (bite size)
3 larges tomatoes (dice tomatoes)
5 pieces garlic (peel and dice)
1 onion
1 teaspoon olive oil
baysil leaves
salt and pepper to taste
2 jalapeno dice
Cooking time: 30-45 minutes or less
1. heat olive oil
2. brown the fresh garlic, onion
3. then add tomatoes - let cook for 4 minutes
4. add the corned beef in a can -mix it all up
5. add the cabbage untill cook and tender.
6. add salt and pepper.
NOTE: Bring it to boil and simmer and cover it until the cabbage is tender.
7. Last thing: add basil and jalapeno cook it only for 5 minutes.
Serve with plain white rice. Cook the rice separately.
This my favorite food. Very healthy.
