 I have lately taken more thought to my diet. One of the first things I did was to get off of processed sugar and High fructose corn syrup. It really gets frustrating because most of the things in the grocery store are full of both.No wonder our children cannot sit still and learn in school.I have gotten a juicer, new blender to make smoothies and a really good book by Dr.Don Colbert called,"What would Jesus Eat?"There is also a company called Bobs Red Mill on the web. There is a link to tell you which grocery store in your area sells the products.

I have thought about my diet also DDC, I slowly gained weight over the last 14 years. Back in Sept, I started dieting, and with the help of God, nerves because of stress, and a lot of hard work, have lost 69 lbs, and 5 dress sizes. I am still going at it. It is coming off slower now, but I recently started up exercising again. It has been so cold here. It really takes a lot of disapline.
One of the things that I cut out from the very beginning was sugar (especially cokes) I began drinking a lot of water.
I have never had a juicer before, but I have heard a lot of good things about them. Keep me updated on your success with the book and juicing! :spin:

Sis.Forever,
I make a mean vegetable juice that makes the kids grimace but I drink it because its good for me and prevents cancer.
It is beets,carrots,cabbage,spinach,celery,red onion(alium Cepa),and tomatos
and really gives you a kick.
I have also began making a smoothie for Ashleigh that she drinks before school and after school.I got this from the book I bought on Add and ADHD.Ashleigh is not ADD but this keeps a kids glucose level more stable and increases their ability to think more clearly.
Brain Shake
one cup soy milk
one tablespoon granulated lecithin
one tablespoon flaxseed oil
one tablespoon protein powder(40/30/30 ratio) I use Balance Brand and get the chocolate flavor.
in winter you can heat this up or in warmer weather put ice cubes into the blender or a frozen banana and make a smoothie out of it. I process it until it is Frappe

Praise the Lord for what you have lost foreverblessed. That is really amazing. I too had gained a lot over the years,. And had been on a few programs, but nothing seemed to work until the one I am on now.
I don't know anything about the diet you are talking about Sister Dana. But I went on one my sister recommended for me in October, and have lost over 40 lbs. They actually don't call it a diet, but rather refer to it as a healthy eating program instead. It is because of going on this program I found out what was causing severe allergic reactions for a couple of years now, sometimes going into anaphalactic shock as a result. I have medication to take, and an epipen in case the meds do not work to bring me out of it. But could not figure out what was causing this until I went on this program called Prism. The first 6 weeks they take you off of all sugar, flour, and pasta products, as well as potatoes. Then the next 6 weeks you can then have potatoes, limited to 3 times a week, and whole wheat or grain breads that have no white flour in it plus corn tortillas. They also ask that you eat a minimum of 1000 calories, but not over 1200, plus suggest taking supplements too. The first 6 weeks all reactions stopped completely. But when I incorporated the bread and potatoes back into my diet, they started again. So I then knew it was either wheat I was allergic to, or else potatoes. And since wheat was the most likely, I stopped eating it entirely, but kept on eating the potatoe. Again, no more reactions as long as I didn't accidentally get a hold of something that had this in it. Which amazingly, you would not believe how much stuff really does. So I have learned to read all labels any more before eating anything I don't know about. Except it is pretty hard to do when you go out to eat. Which I seldom do anymore.
But anyway, I lost most of my weight during the first18 weeks, and out of that, probably half of it the first 6 weeks. I am getting close to my goal now, but it is coming off slower now too, which I have heard you kind of plateau at some point. Whereas in the beginning it comes off fast.
I bought Prisms first 3 - 6 week phases of their program, but then opted to quit purchasing anymore, as I felt I had a handle on what to eat and not to eat anymore, not getting into the habit again of eating all that bad stuff. Which I was indeed doing before.
I have never heard of anyone not losing on this program. Of course, they have groups in different areas that meet together once a week, but none here. You would understand what I mean if you visited the town we live in. If you blink while going down the highway, you will miss it completely.
Prism will also assign a coach to you for a fee, which I opted not to do. So I am proof that you can do it by yourself once you have an idea of what to do, and stick to it. Because their theory is that most people are addicted to sugar and white flour products. In my case it was wheat breads and the sweets came in second. But they say if you ahve a food allergy, chances are it is something you really want, craving it even, which I definitely did. But for me a little bite isn't worth what I end up going through. So I have a lot of incentive now to stay away from all of that stuff anyway. And since white flour is made from wheat, and most sweets are made from flour, I stay away from them too. And am finding there are flours I can use to make bread and even sweets if you want them. I do make the breads, but still stay away from the sweets. As they are also addicting too. Amazingly, I really don't want the sweets anymore most of the time anyway.
If anyone needs some help, here is the URL for the Prism Program.
http://www.pwlp.com/next.php?page=welcome
I hope it is ok to post it.
They do claim to be Christian, but that is debateable as you know.
But the things they send you are filled with a quite a bit of scripture none the less. They also have video tapes on the first two six week sessions that are very helpful too I believe. And their groups that meet evidently do pray for one anothers success too, as my sister and her daughter who live in Montana was going to them for a while.
I think it is what works for each person is what they should do, as long as it is healthy, as we are all different. This is the only one I have been able to stay on for any length of time. I think because it is pretty well rounded, rather than having a lot of restrictions such as the Adkins Diet and those like it. We don't put it on in a week or even a month. So we are not going to take it off that fast either, so you have to find something you can live with. And I say that, because even though you do lose it, if you return to those old habits again, you will again be right back where you started. And that is bad too. So you need to pick a program that basically you can live with their maintainance program too, once you have lost it.
I have also learned a lot about nutrition too. And most people in this country just do not eat right. And anyone that goes to these fast food restaurants cannot be eating right at all, as they are murder. You can eat one meal in them, and end up eating more calories than I can have in one entire day.
They also offer a Calorie and fat book which is really excellent. But if you go to Amazon.com, you probably can find it cheaper if you don't mind buying used, which is what I did. If not, then I believe Prism sells it cheaper new than Amazon does. In fact, I check out Amazon first for any Christian books I might be looking for too, as you would be surprised to find they even have a lot of them as well. At least I was anyway.
Sorry for the length of this. But maybe a littel of the info. will help someone else. And the rest just chalk it up to me being gabby.
:D

Wow Sister Sandy,
I remember you sharing how bad your allergies were with me on another thread.I too have not had a bout since I quit all the white flour and sugar products.I had allergies to dairy.Who would have thought.I took everyone in the household off of dairy.I now buy a soy milk thats in the dairy section called Silk.It comes in vanilla and chocolate for the leary.I am used to it now.My dad is now able to eat his cornbread and milk at night since we found a milk he could drink.I also reacted to Tuna one day at work and had to take something for it.I never knew I was allergic. Is it possible that this Prism program is the Phase diet plan so many are talking about. There is a program that I only view at work called Your Life.I have learned so much from that. Its on the christian channel.I do not have tv in my home by choice so I only see it at work but its really good.I think they have a web page but I don't know the URL.lv sis.c

Although I don't go to weight watchers, I have all the books, and everything I need to follow the point system. It has really worked for me because I am able to continue an active lifestyle that includes eating out. So far, it has worked for me.

What places do you all find to eat out that make it easier when you are dieting or trying to eat right?

Ddc,
With WW points, there are several books that list many restaurants and the items on their menu. I have used it for so long, I know that a Taco Bell taco supreme, has 5 points. An average burger has between 8-12 points, depending on how large and where it is from. Chili is 4 points... etc... I can usually judge about anything. I get (because of my weight) 28 points a day. It is really easy to follow. If I choose to drink a cola, it is three points for 12 oz. Of course there are a lot of veggies and diet drinks and stuff that have 0 points.
I have a good memory, so I don't carry the books around any more. To me this is really simple for me to follow.

Sister Dana,
I really don't know if it is the same or not. There is one out that was sold on HSN that is supposed to be very popular. But it seems to be very similar to Adkins Diet, and while I have heard some good things about that one, it just wasn't for me. I was determined to find something I could live with. I think people yoyo because of going on and off of these programs. My daughter and her husband went on the Adkins diet about the same time I decided to do this one, after asking a bunch of questions about it because of being determined to find something that I could live with.
I wonder if the Phase diet isn't the one that HSN (Home Shopping Network) sells? I will go up on their web page and look later or tomorrow, as it is getting sort of late here.
I think you also mentioned before about having a problem with allergies when I asked if anyone had any type of bread recipes that did not have wheat or white flour in it. I now make the bread with Red Mill flour that is gluten and wheat free. I have been ordering it from them though, as there is not any place that sells the large bags around here, which they sell on line. We do have a store in Mt. Home that sells all kinds of a variety of different types of products the health food stores sell, but have rejected because the box might have been damaged in some way or another, and etc. And you can return anything you buy from them if it is bad or not satisfied. I bought some organic rice cereal from them for 50 cents a box, that sold in the health food store for much much more than that. Because they are expensive usually. Have also purchased rice and potatoe flour from them much cheaper as well. So when we go there, I go in this place.
Sister foreverblessed,
My sister has also done weight watchers before, but seemed to always gain the weight back after losing it. But of course, that does not mean you will. She has had a weight problem for a long time, even in her younger years, which I did not have until I reached about the age of 40 some. Then little by little I began to gain. But gained most of it the last 6 years.
I do believe peoples metabolism differs, which is why some can eat anything, yet stay slim. But I was always this very active person, especially in my younger years, whereas my sister was not, which probably has something to do with it too. But then as you grow older, you also grow slower too it seems. :D At least that has been true in my case anyway. It sounds like you are doing really well on what you are on.

I have heard that lately it has been found out that many ills including Cancer and Obesity can be linked to Candida Albicans
which is a fungal yeast growth within the body.By eating a certain kind of diet and ommitting certain substances it can be eliminated from your system. They say if you crave alot of sweets and or dairy products more than likely this is a sign of Candida.
Also allergies to dairy can cause alot of sinus and or ear problems such as repeated ear infections. When Ashleigh had alot of ear problems I candled her ears and the majority of what came out was a white powdery substance that I was told was yeast. So it was suggested I take her off of dairy.I don't know about you all but I feel satisfied when I do the right things for my family.lv sis.c

This is a great thread. Praise the Lord Sisters!!
I have struggled with my weight for a long while. It seems to the case with a lot of Mums.
About 18 months ago I was given a book called Food for Thought, by Phillip Day. I think it is called and it opened my eyes to a lot of what us westerners eat, and how much junk we fill our poor under nourished bodies with.
I am not very disaplined when it comes to food so hence the weight gain. After reading this book and finding out about a bit more about the author and being encouraged by my christian friend I started to change my diet. I cut out a lot of my meat and dairy intake and increased my water drinking per day and when I drank it and also increased my fresh fruit and veges every day. After about 4 weeks or there abouts I started feeling the benifits of it and with a regular intake of suppliments, the weight started coming off. I went down one size in skirt which thrilled me to bits. But then winter came and it is hard to get all the nice fruit variety and I started slipping.
It was hard doing this way of eating as I didn't really have much support from my better half but he didn't stop me really. When I tried to start it up again when the fruit started coming in again, it was not easy!!
But I am going to persist and keep trying, and see how I go.
I think also we can have a bit of a bondage with food. I am sure you ladies have witnessed this too!!
(I haven't worked out the expressions yet so I want to let you know I am saying the above with no malice or offending intended.)

I have struggled with my weight since the dawn of time. Okay, maybe not since the dawn of time, but there has never been a day of my life that I have not been overweight. That's one of the reasons I am almost never in front of a camera.
I would like to lose about 100 lbs, but it seems like such a monumental thing, that I get tremendously discouraged in this area. It also seems everything that appears to work is costly and we're on a fairly tight budget in my house. Not only that, but I don't have much time to put into it, so long, drawn out recipes and reading books is pretty much not going to happen unless there are Cliff Notes on this subject.
Anyone have any short useful tips just for beginning to cut back (at least)? Would cutting back on fake sugars be a good start? Would that mean I was not to ever have ice cream again?
Sis Foreverblessed, your testimony is extremely encouraging to me. Can you tell me more about how you've gone about it? You can pm me or email me if you wish...

Sis.Mireland and BurningforJesus,
The first thing you can do for yourself is to get off sugar and artificial sweetners.Wean yourself off of them.Start first maybe with Turbanado sugar and then go to Organic sugar and or Sucanat.Sucanat is my personal favorite. It is pasturized raw cane juice. It spoons up just like sugar and probably cost wise the better deal. There is a sweetner called Stevia that is okay.It is better to buy it in the bottle with the dropper. Also you can use Barley Malt,Steen Syrup, or Pure Maple Syrup or Honey.
Some people have allergies to honey so becareful and don't do alot at first until you get used to it.Also if you overdue it you will visit the bathroom alot...hint..hint..
Another thing you can do is read what you buy and if it has sugar or High Fructose Corn Syrup don't purchase it.
Buy yourself a rice cooker and start using brown rice.
Read the bread wrappers.Skip those with the Fructose or High Fructose Corn Syrup.Go for a whole grain variety.Do not buy unprocessed flour or products made with them. They bleach this with something similar to clorox.
Get off of milk and cheese.Opt instead for Soy Silk which comes in Vanilla,Chocolate or Regular.I recommend the vanilla for starters until you get used to the lightness.
Change your bread spread.Use Smart Balance or melt aprox 30 sec 1 stick real butter and stir into it one cup light olive oil. Then place in refrigerator and you will get a bread spread. Its better to enjoy real butter than load yourself up with fake stuff.
Try to buy things without preservatives.
You will be so surprised at how good things taste when you make them from scratch.
I eat alot of baked sweet potatoes.Bake them in the oven. The microwave leaves alot to be desired.
Go out and buy yourself a big crock pot.It is a wise investment and you can always keep a pot of beans cooking for a hungry hubby.
I love salads and I now buy a multitude of veggies.I have a new fondness for baby spinich.
In the past two months I have lost thirty pounds by doing the above. It really is not much to do.Just getting off the junk did it.
Plus I take a multivitamin.And I drink 30 cc Noni juice daily.
If you eat right you can have the occasional icecream and it won't be so bad.Its just when you do it habitually that it is bad for you.
That way you can do it once in a while and not feel the guilt.
I don't know about you all but when I shop and buy good things for my family I feel so good taking it all home.I know then that I am being the woman of proverbs.lv sis.c

Sister Apostolic Kitty,
It can be done!!! Try what Sis Cooper has written above. With God nothing is impossible. Don't try to do it all at once cut things out by the week or even two if that suits you better, but not all at once.
With prayer and a little determination it can happen. You will be surprised:):):):)
Don't wait til the first of the week, start now!! Why wait. No time like the present.
About the cost? You will find you will be saving money when cutting out things with sugar in them and then you can use that money to buy fresh fruit and veges.
At the start of the change of diet, weigh youself and don't do it again for at least two weeks. :):):):)
I will be praying for you. I have to go, my girls will be coming home from school and I must be off this or they will want on it too. Will come on another day and see how things are going.

Sis ddc:
Sugar will be hard to get off of, but if I can still have something sweet sometimes, then I'll survive. LOL Really, sweets are my biggest weakness and the reason I often don't do diets...because I know if I can only have bland stuff, never anything sweet, I'll cave.
As for artificial sweetners, if you are speaking of Equal, Sweet and Low and stuff like that, I don't even give them the time of day. They taste nasty.
Where do you get Sucanat?? I think that one sounds good. We don't usually use much sugar except in kool-aid and on the occassion of me baking, which I don't do much, but I bet that would make a difference. Besides, it's better to eat better anyway.
I understand the brown rice thing, because I know it's better for you, but why buy a rice cooker? I've always cooked rice the good, old fashioned way.
We already use wheat bread in our house, but I admit my favorite is the honey wheat. :) I could easily implement that.
I don't think Soy Silk would be a winner in my house. Hubby would probably cringe and have a fit at just the name. LOL. I used to drink skim milk till I was married to him. Soy Silk sounds expensive, too. Is it? And, if you're off the milk and cheese, where do you get your calcium from? The fruits and veggies?
I'd love to make more things from scratch, but it takes time to do that. Time I don't have. Hubby does most of the cooking at my house. In fact, yesterday he made a roast in the crock pot...mmmmmmgoood!
Wish hubby liked beans (he's a yankee) and that we both liked sweet potatos, but neither of us do.
I love salads with spinach in them..especially grilled chicken ceaser...mmmm, but wouldn't that get boring after a while?
What's Noni juice?
I most definitely appreciate your suggestions, and will implement them, progressively....just don't know about that Soy Silk thing..lol

Sis Burning,
I immensely appreciate your encouragement. I definitely need it.
And I know myself, I would definitely have to take it slow at first. So, between that the budget, and the family, I will slowly, but surely begin changing some of the things we have in the house, beginning with the sugar and making sure we have the better of the wheat breads.
I caught a great sale on Zatarans rice several months ago and had a bunch of it. After it's gone I suppose I will try brown rice again. Is there a secret to cooking brown rice? I've tried brown rice before and it seemed to take forever to cook. Is that the reason for a rice cooker or was I just being impatient? LOL

Apostolic Kitty,
I started by cutting out cokes, and it was the end of Aug, so I was eating fresh vegi's a lot too. Protein will keep the hunger away, so I make sure to get plenty of that. I started using frozen Healthy choice meals for my lunch, and drink a lot of water.
Getting off of regular sugar may be fine for some, but I need something that I can live with. I drink regular cokes sometimes now, I just make allowance for the points. If I drink a coke, I don't get as much food.
I live life, as it comes. I have learned how to balance eating out which is a big part of my life, it is fellowship/entertainment many of times. I eat basically anything I really want, but learning how to eat a very small amount of it. You would be amazed at how this can effect your mind. There are so many of our battles that are in our mind. If you tell yourself you can't have something, your gonna want it real bad.
I have found if I deny myself ice cream or what ever sweet food that I want then, I am just going to be preoccupied with it. Eat it, get it over with, just eat a small amount. Believe me this works. You will be amazed at how it really doesn't taste all that great, and really isn't worth the points or calories. I know what it is to take a few bites, and hand it over to the kids.
It has also helped me to buy a smaller skirt (straight) and try it on every week. To see the difference in clothing, has been the most powerful encouragement to me. I try it on for my girls, and then we watch as the skirt soon fits, and then becomes loose, and I go out and buy the size too small again. It is wonderful when the girls say WOW Mom, look at you! I haven't been this small since they were babies. My youngest keeps track of how small my waist is getting by how far her arms will wrap around me. She keeps the measurement going. Kids are also good for keeping you on track, and they love to exercise with me too.
Can't email you right now, but will at a later time, hope this helps.

Also, one more thing, If sweets are your thing, I understand. FOOD is mine. I love FOOD. I would rather have it than sweets.
There are a lot of different sweet items in the frozen section by weight watchers and others, that still taste good, but have a lot less fat and sugar. Try skinny cows (ice cream sandwiches!, their great)
Start trying all the deserts out and see how you like them. If you think you might like to see how the weight watchers point system works, go visit their website. I could get you the books to start, without buying into the program. I have enough friends right her at school who will buy me sets of the books. It is as simple as staying within the points allowed everyday. I lost 4 lbs last week, and I am actually feeling the effects of the smaller clothes bought in the last two weeks getting smaller. It really is working.

Hi Sister Mireland,
A rice cooker will help crack the hull of the rice and make it easier to eat and softer.Sucanat makes awesome lemonade.I buy it at Albertsons or the Health Food store. You could start by using organic sugar.I never drink cokes hardly ever.I gave up the diet ones because of all the chemicals. If I ever fight cancer it will not be my fault willingly.Noni juice you can get at walmart.Type it into
your browser to get the testimonials. Its a neat Tahitian fruit.
Also if you hate beans how about lentils? or try roasted soynuts for a snack. They are very light...lighter than peanuts.Soysillk is in the dairy case now.I like the vanilla and love the chocolate.
If you must have sweets eat golden raisens.Wome crave carbs.Usually we are adicted to them.I get my calcium from greens and multivits. We were not born suckling calves.YOu would be surprised at how good soy cheese is.Especially by a company called Melissas. Also I drink Clemintine Tangerine Juice.I try to give my body good things. Its a cadillac not a volkswagon...lv sis.c

Sis. Forever: I don't really drink much cokes unless hubby brings Mountain Dew into the house. I really wish he didn't sometimes. Before he was around I never kept that stuff in the house.
I think the protein will make a big difference. And, while I knew it was the "meat" in the diet, I never really considered that it kept the hunger away.

I was much like you and thought along those lines for so long but then the Lord began to deal with me about taking care of the temple. We preach against things that harm the body but then we forget the effects putting harmful substances into our body can do to it such as WHITE SUGAR!!!Have you any of you read how this is processed and what effect it has on your body.It affects yo like a drug.Try and get off of it and see how much stuff at the supermarket has either sugar or high fructose corn syrup. It is very addictive and causes a number of aliments and promotes candida albicans which can cause many illinesses such as diabetes, vascular problems, heart disease, ear nose and throat aliments, cancer.A new theory has been proven that a person who develops cancer has a high degree of candida before the growth of tumors.Take responsibility for your health before its too late and you don't have it anymore. Many people wish they could turn back the clock and do it different.Arthritis and intestinal problems are also a result of candida. So is hormonal imbalances and moodswings et al pms in women.Alot of physical things are a result of our diet.We cannot go on being bad stewards of the temple of God.He expects us to do good housekeeping and that doesn't just mean take a bath, comb your hair and use deodorant. Please pray about this.Your good health has alot to do with your many years of usefulness in the kingdom.Lying in the nursing home with a stroke and or worse is no kind of witness when it could have been prevented.lv sis.c

Hi Ladies,
From what I understand, both white sugar and flour is addictive. And if you are addicted to it, the only way IMHO to break that addiction, is to cut it out of your diet completely. And honestly, you would not believe how much better you feel after doing so too, finding it is worth it.
I also read if you feel you cannot live without something, and are consistently overeating that product, you are very likely allergic to it even though your body often takes care of that allergy, whether you have any apparent affects from it or not. And often it is this very product that causes weight gain as well.
I was diagnosed with uterine cancer over 6 years ago. The doctors told me I had to much estrogen in my body, which caused the cancer, and finally had the hysterectomy they recommended, after much prayer. But it could have been my diet that was the cause of this all along. It also could have been my diet that prevented me from recieving the miraculous healing I was believing for too, now that I think about it. I mean, is God going to heal us of something that we are causing ourselves, and going to continue doing afterwards? Maybe, maybe not. But is God going to miraculously heal a smoker of cancer of the lungs as long as they plan to continue to smoke? Maybe, maybe not. I don't really know. But this same principle could be applied to both couldn't it? We are told to take care of these temples that belong to Him. And it seems that many believers, whether apostolic of not, quit the smoking and drinking and etc. but replace this with eating unwisely, thus destroying the temple anyway. Is this ok anymore than the others things? I am not going to judge anyone else in these areas. But for me, I don't believe it is anymore.
I have read that everyone has the cell in there bodies that causes cancer, but it is harmless until it becomes unbalanced and takes over. I don't know if this is true, again only having to go by what I read. Is this what you are saying sister Cooper? What exactly is Candida albicans anyway? As what you are writing is very interesting to me. I am far from being an expert, that is for sure, just beginning to learn about all of this.
Also, there are good oils and bad oils too. Many oils on the market today are processed, I understand, which changes the consistency of the oil, even if it starts out good. Margarine is a man made product of course, and therefore processed, and very bad. I understand this is absolutely a no no. Eat butter. I am told the good oils are 1. Extra virgin hard pressed olive oil; flax seed oil/ sesame oil; canola oil; avacado oil; walnut oil; soybean oil; safflower oil; and sunflower oil. And you may have to be careful which ones you buy of those as well. I was also told that when you fry in oils, heating them, you then change the consistency of the oil, causing it to go bad. But if you must fry, to use butter. Of course, this all was this doctors belief. I do fry, but I do not do so that often.
But you need the good oils for the essential fatty acids, whether you take a supplement or use oils in your dressings and etc. Right now I take a supplement called Udo's Oil, which is only sold in certain health food stores, and has to be kept refrigerated. But you can get these by using the oils I listed, from what I understand. Udo's oil is somewhat expensive, but it is also natural, and I have no problem taking it without anything else, even though it is oil. Some people cannot take it like that. If you can stand the oily taste, it has a nutty taste otherwise. Sister Cooper may know of something else that is less expensive too.
It isn't true that we don't need any fat or oils. As the right kind will actually aid in weight loss, from what I have been told, much of this info gotten from the Prism diet plan VHS tapes they send.
Of course, I am not an expert on any of this, going by what I read and hear mostly, then trying to use a little common sense along with it. It stands to reason that we do need oils. It also stands to reason that we need to eat whatever God has made Himself, rather than all of the unnatural man made products on the market today, when you think about it. Or anything that man has tampered with, changing the molecular structure of it, such as white flour and sugar products. And what about milk, which I have not thought of either until Sister Cooper brought it up. But they have certainly changed the consistency of milk too? I know they did it for a purpose supposedly. But is this perhaps why so many are allergic to these products that have been changed such as wheat, dairy products and etc?
One thing I have never had a problem with PTL is being addicted to soda pop. Perhaps because in growing up when I did, most people just did not buy it at all, even after the 2nd WW. I used to drink fountain cokes occasionally as a teenager. But soda pop, I actually did not and still do not like it today that well. As for diet pops, if you must, Diet Rite and RC Cola both do use Splenda to sweeten it. I don't know how good that is either, but they do claim it is made out of natural sugar. There is also another product the health food stores sell called Stevea to use as a sweetener. I may have spelled that wrong. Do you know about these Sister Cooper?

Sister Sandy,
Go out and buy some grape juice either white or red and buy a large bottle of seltzer water.Add juice to water to taste and put on ice.Voila..soda pop thats good for you.You can use any kind of juice you like.Consider what soda is?Sugar...burned...carmel is burned sugar...carbonated with lots of other chemicals. How about buying some rootbeer extract and seltzer water and making your own soda.As for sugar if you really want to get off altogether I suggest weaning yourself off with Organic Sugar which is a cane juice derived. Also oil have hydrogen gas pumped into them...thus the term hydrogonized.Sugar also is chemically produced.Milk is also processed to such a state that they end up adding stuff to it...get the term enriched...why would we need to enrich something that is in a natural state. Also flour is bleached with a chemical akin to clorox bleach.Buy unbleached flour or better yet get used to other grains besides wheat.I love oat bread.Rye is no my fav due to the seeds but okay in a pinch.
For sweetners I have stopped using Splenda due to the fact it is alcohol processed and they have no long term studies on it as of yet.Stevia is okay but I prefer Sucanat.Stevia actually has fiber and is called supplementing your coffee or tea.It also comes in
liquid form which is nicer. But I admit it is pricey as compared to using sucanat.Which i love in lemonade.
Flax oil is a good source of Omega 3 Oil and you will not believe the change in your skin when adding oil to your diet.
Constipated???? Take a few tablespoons of olive oil...no problem.
I admit the taste is wierd but I can hack it for the benefit.
Hope this helps....lv sis.c

Well, for me, when my doc said I had diabetes!!! wow, I was scared, so he had me get off sugar completely, believe it or not, it was not that hard, and I had already started walking, he said continue it, I increased the walking, and holycow! I lost 25 lbs, but slowly. He told me to lose only 1 lb a week! and so I did as told, it was simple enough, walking really helped, and I began to love it, with my christian music on my walkman, I actually looked forward to it. Hypertension is also a BIG problem with me.
I did sweat a lot, but so what! I got better and better from 1/4 mile to 2 miles, but guess what! I hurt my foot, had to be laid up, and lost the momentum!
So I'm back to trying to get back on track (no pun intended) and its not easy, the lbs come back easily, and I also started eating sweets again, not a lot, but enough! So now I fighting back again, talk about guilt feelings! I'm ashamed of myself, but that won't help, so pray for me all.
Its aggravating how easily one can "backslide" from anything., just a little compromise here or there, that EvilOne will try to get us anyway he can, food CAN be an addiciton., some crave sweets, some salt, some fats, some dairies, (I was not prejudiced against any of them!). Addictive personalities one person called them., if its not one thing, its another. I've been weak all my life, and I have no excuse NOW. So there, I confessed!!!
Now, I'm off to the track! I prefer outside walking, although I did get a treadmill, actually, it was a gift from the Lord, it was given to us for a song.

I am currently reading a book called 14 -day Herbal Cleansing
It is a step by step guide to inner cleansing techniques for increased energy, vitality and beauty. by Laurel Vukovic
who has served as editor and senior writer of Natural Health Magazine. She also teaches classes in natural healing.
I want to be honest that being a nurse it is hard sometimes for me to think in the terms of not using drugs for healing. But honestly herbs and diet are what God gave us for healing. In fact when the children of Isreal came out of Egypt God gave them guidelines for eating. He is very concerned about how we take care of our bodies. If he had not then why did he even bother to tell them how to eat right. They had just come out of the flesh pot of Egypt and Idolatrous practices. We are promised in the word of God that none of these diseases shall come upon us but we have to do the right thing in order for that to be so.If we are doing all we can there is no guilt to ask God to do the rest and expect him to answer.Honestly we would be at the altar alot less for annointing if we treated our bodies as temples of God.We can harp about people who smoke and go and pour ourselves a great big coke on ice and eat a fat laden hamburger and fries with extra mayo and a high fat desert or fried apple pie and then say oooooooooo....Goddddddddd.....Pleaseeeeeee....Heal ....me....
pretty out of balance I would say. That is why I decided to get off my lazy couch and do something about it.One of the things I began to do is detox with green tea, herbs and juice fasting coupled with my regular fasting and prayer. If you are diabetic may I suggest the book SUGAR BUSTERS and also for any others who are on the road to disaster and want help.God bless you I was there once but now about 30 pounds lighter and feeling like a dream I want to encourage you today to break this lousy pattern before it kills you.We need all the soldiers we can get in Gods army. Some people would be used much longer but God can't help it if they have worn out the vehicle he provided with too much road rage.lv sis.c

Have any of you done research on how Canola oil is refined? I just read something yesterday concerning this.I read that it is refined with toxic things. And all these years I thought I was doing so much more for my family by using it.Go figure!!!So I am back to using light olive.Since I do not fry foods it is not much more expensive and does not have that strong taste like the darker green first press oil.lv sis.c

Sister Cooper, finally got back in here to look at what you wrote. I will certainly try that idea regarding mixing the juices with seltzer water.
I personally do not use sugar or the sweeteners in anything, as I like honey, even on my cereal.
Amen to the green tea.
Actually, we should not use anything if at all possible that has been refined, processed or changed from its natural state. They have even messed with the way eggs begin in chickens. Which removes the lecithin that supposedly counters the bad cholesterol you now get from them supposedly.
The problem is, it is sometimes very expensive to buy the products, if you have to buy them from the health food stores.
Yes, I have different kinds of flours to make my bread that is wheat and gluten free, which I make mostly for myself, as Cody and Al prefers the whole grain breads better, which I cannot eat anymore, most of them having wheat in them.
Thanks for all the info. As it is really helpful.

Sis.Sandy,
I have been buying granulated lecithin from the health food store to add to the shake I make for my six year old in the am before school.Do you have a link that talks about this being removed form eggs? Today my dad and another sister from the church and I spoke about raising some chickens that produce a low fat egg.I believe they are called Aracanna's.I am not sure. The egg shells are a nice light blue tint.I have purchased some over the years but don't know anyone who sells them now.We figure that we can sell a few dozen here and there to help with the feed bill and that way have all the nice fresh eggs we would like.sis.c

Wow, I just posted a message under the Plastic surgery thread, that probably would have fit perfectly here as well!
I mentioned I would love to just undergo a tummy tuck to help curb my appetite, and thus lose the extra 100 lbs or so I would like. I have tried Herbalife, Metabolife, and was eating right at one time.
Now with my schedule so hectic and money being a little tight, it is very challenging eating the right things. Sis. Cooper, the place where I purchased the Herbalife products sells noni juice. Is it good? What is it? herbalife caused me to lose a lot of weight, but I could not keep it up b/c of the money.
I saw a commercial about this new drug for severely obese called Leptoprin. Do any of you know any more info on this? I looked it up online, their website is a little vague and does not go into enough detail.
I was seriously considering this option as well, $153/bottle is a little steep, but if it will jumpstart me to a healthier lifestyle, than I will make the sacrifice.
This is one of the last struggles with my flesh I have. I wanna win this one; but it is difficult.
Pray with me that I can overcome this..

Sister Wenona,
I drink noni juice. The cheapest place I have gotten it is Walmart by a company called natures bounty.I have been drinking it for about two months now so I am no great testimonial thus far.
I will say that if you want to jump start your metabolism the drug isn't the way.In fact you will just yoyo on at this rate and end up larger.Plus this stuff is wierd on your circulatory system.
Dump the sugar and start eating a more natural diet.Forget the
food pyramid you learned in school. The thing you eat the most ought to be vegatables and fruits followed by whole grains and cereals followed by small amts of lean meat.Drink lots of water and start an exercise program. You had fun putting it on so get ready to fight it off.lv sis.c
I just want to say that I feel better than ever since I ditched the sugar. At first I was tired and craving it.Now I don't miss it at all.
In fact I see it as my natural enemy. That really helps...sis.c

I agree with Sister Cooper entirely. Get rid of the sugar, and if you can, also eliminate all white flour products too.
I don't know what your financial situation is Survivor, but I do know the Prism Diet I bought works if you stick to it. Because it breaks the habitual cycle one is often on because of eating the wrong kinds of foods. If you can afford to buy the first two phases of this program, each costing $60.00 a piece, and will follow what they tell you in this, and listen to the tapes they send you as well, you will lose weight. In fact, it will probably pour off of you during the first 6 weeks, especially if you are really overweight to begin with. I don't know exactly why this is, but it is. I lost the majority of my weight during the first 12 weeks I was on their programs. I bought the first three, and now copy their daily sheets for keeping track of what I eat. You would also need to get a good caloric counter book too. The one thing that helps me the most is to keep track of what I do eat every day. And it doesn't take long, once you get used to doing so either.
I also think, that sometimes when we do have to pay for something, it gives us an incentive to stick to it. Because the first week is the hardest of course. Then it begins to become easier. And honestly, once you get off of all this stuff, you find you don't want it anymore anyway just as Sister Cooper said as well. But it does take time.
I also read a book that says if you have a food addiction, whether it is apparent or not, whatever it is you are addicted to will cause weight gain. And you can be addicted to something, yet not know it because your body is fighting it off yet, not having any after affects such as breaking out or hives and etc. And it is usually something you really love to eat too. But the truth is, most people become addicted to white flour and processed sugar products according to what the Prism program says. And I believe it.
The reason people regain the weight, is because they return to their old habits of eating this stuff. So it is a life style that one has to make up their mind they want to do too. But once you do so, as Sister Cooper has said, you want to because of the way you feel. You cannot believe how much better you do feel either. That alone makes it all worth it.
But it isn't going to come off in a day either. But then we didn't put it on in a day did we? But if you give up all this stuff that is bad for you all at once, you will be shocked at how fast the weight does come off too. I know I was, But you cannot cheat either. Because that will not break that habitual cycle that you are most likely on by eating this stuff to begin with. And it is that cycle that needs to be broken. Which is why the Prism program works for everyone that will do it, while some of the others do not. The first phase is rough, but after that they do begin to incorporate some things back into your diet that they take away at first. But limited this time, and only specific things such as whole wheat bread that does not have any white flour in it. And you would be surprised at how many breads that do have white flour in it even though they claim it is whole wheat. So you have to watch the labels. I cannot eat wheat products, but if I could, then I could have whole wheat bread.
By the way, I am not trying to sell this plan because I have something to gain from it, but only because it worked for me, and has worked for everyone else I know personally as well, these people losing a bunch of weight, and not only that, but are keeping it off too. Because if you don't keep it off afterwards, why go on it to begin with? I did not do so until I was determined to do so. I have also seen my sister go on other programs, lose weight, just to put it right back on later, starting over again. Until this one. And finally she is successful so far, in not doing so. And this time I don't believe she will gain it back either.
Anyway, if interested, I think I posted the web site info for Prism and where to get the calorie counter book the cheapest on the 1st page of this subject
Guys, if you smoke, just try to quit smoking by trying to do so gradually. I don't know of anyone that has been successfil in doing so. But quit smoking by throwing them away totally, and not picking them up for a certian length of time, and you will break the habit eventually. And this same principle applies to what we eat too. You cannot give up a little bit of sugar and white floured products and break the habit I do not believe. You have to do so all at once, and stick to it. Then you will begin to find alternatives to all of this stuff eventually, such as fruits and etc. instead that are good for you. You also learn to cook with other things such as honey as well.
Sister Cooper, I read that info about eggs a long time ago in a book I had regarding their eliminating the lecithin out of eggs because of their eliminating the rooster from being the one that produces the eggs along with the hens. How they do it now, I do not remember, except it isn't the old fashioned natural way, or so this book claimed anyway. Of course, there may be farmers in your area that do. Because what they are talking about is the big egg producers. And I am also not even sure where this book is at now either. It seems it might have been written by Jack La Layne, but am not sure about that as well. I do know that most health food stores sell the eggs that are produced naturally. I don't buy them anymore, as we do not have a health food store in our community, and sometimes do not get to one that often. And of course, you can take natural grain lecithin as you said, purchasing it in the health food stores too.
I have never heard of the type of eggs you are talking about, so I wouldn't know anything about them either.

I was just told this weekend to go on the Atkins diet?. I started out Sunday to do this. I found myself craving something sweet soooo bad. I ended up giving in, and went overboard. :)
Today, I have done pretty good, but I am still craving something sweet to drink. It is terrible denying this body those carbs.
I have agreed to try this for a couple of weeks. My friend has lost I guess about 90 lbs on it. I will do it just long enough to get this flesh under control, and slowly add good carbs back to my diet.
If It doesn't work, I will go back to my old faithful. :)
Didn't realize I was so addicted to sugar and carbs.

Boy Sister Forever,
I was addicted to carbs so bad.I loved to eat Hot Tamales candies.I used to take a bag of them to work every night and snack on them like they were fruit or something. When I stopped eating them it was like nicking for a cigarette. Now I just eat fruit or pop me some popcorn or chew gum.I have also taken a liking to golden raisens in moderation.Go and check out this web site by Dr.Don Colbert. He has some good tips for dieting the bible way and really believes in a 40-30-30 balance for the good of your body.I know many who have gone on the atkins diet and have gained it all back and are bigger than ever. All it did was hurt their bodies.Too much protein can damage your kidney. Also many people have gallbladder problems on the atkins diet.lv sis.c

Don't have a gallbladder. I am going to go on it to just jump start a good weightloss, and then go back to WW, but really watch the carbs. I think I will just look out for the good carbs, eat lots of fruits and vegi's and get plently of exercise. I think it is going to be a way for me to get off the sugar, and I am addicted, although I have lost so much already.

I tried the Atkins diet some years ago, and still have their book.
I honestly just could not stay on it very long. And ended up gaining more afterwards. I am not a big meat eater to begin with. And I really have a difficult time believing carrots are bad for anyone which is also a no no on this diet to begin with. I have heard pros and cons on this diet too.
The one I am on, takes you off of a lot of things for the first 6 weeks, to break the habit, but then begins to put you back onto the good breads and etc after that. But they do suggest never getting back onto the processed sugars and white floured products though. But I have had some since, but not a lot. To be honest, once you break the sugar habit, you don't really want much of any of it even when you do take some. Once you eat a little of it, you find yourself not really wanting it after all. But I do know it is not easy at all.
I have heard that most people do gain their weight back and then some on the Atkins Diet too. Not all of course, but some.
My son in law and daughter is on that diet now. Or at least they were. I really do agree with Sister Cooper about the meat issue. But while I did say something to them, it is hard to tell your kids what they should do. Especially once they have grown kids of their own. Then they usually are trying to tell us what to do instead. :D. So I am sure they thought I should have gone on the Atkins Diet instead of spending all that money for the one I was on. But it worked and is still working for me, so it was all worth it for me. As I feel better and feel healthier than I have in a long time. And I needed help in the area of what to do and what not to do when I began, not really knowing, or realizing what I know and realize today about this. Which still isn't a lot, but a lot more than I started out with, that is for sure. But honestly, it is very similar to what Sister Cooper is telling us to do here. So if you listen to her, you will lose weight I believe. The only thing they added was a conference with a psychologist as to some of the reasons why people overeat and eat what they do on one of their tapes, which was somewhat interesting.

I read a book once by a Spirit filled woman about how when she was young her mom was a mental patient. Her father spent so much time and money on her care that they had very little to eat.
She used to walk by the icecream place and put her face on the glass and say that when she grew up she would eat all she wanted to.About all they had to eat at home was potatoes.
When she became an adult she became very obese because of this.It took her years and the Holy Ghost to break the pattern.

Praise the Lord Sisters. A while back in this thread some one asked what the Vitamin B17 was. I have borrowed the books I needed to give the correct info on this and managed to get this letter written, off line, and hopefully I will get on tonight and send it in for reading.
This is an FDA Toxicologist on Vitamin B17, taken from the “The Little Cyanide Cookbook” I have copied it from the book by Phillip Day 'food for thought'. Here tis':-
“Because of its unique molecular structure, this compound releases cyanide only at the cancer site, thus destroying cancer cells while nourishing non-cancer tissue. Those populations in the world, which eat these vitamin-rich foods, simply do not get cancer – and they live to be much older than those who subsist on a typical modern diet.
Cyanide is minute quantities and in the proper food forms, instead of being poisonous, actually is an essential component of normal body chemistry. Vitamin B12, for instance, contains cyanide in the form of cyanocobalamin.
VitaminB17 (also known as Laetrile or amygdalin) gradually has been replace in the menus of modern mad with foods which have been sweetened, processed, refined and synthesized. During this same time span, the cancer rate has been climbing steadily upward.”
The most common foods you get B17 from are these. Apples seeds, Apricot kernels, Millet, alfalfa sprouts, bamboo shoots barley, beet tops, bitter almonds, blackberries, boysenberries, brown rice, buckwheat, cashews, cassava (tapioca), cherry kernels, cranberries, currants, fava beans, flax seeds, garbanzo beans, gooseberries, green peas, huckleberries, kidney beans, lima beans, linseed meat, loganberries, macadamia nuts, millet seed, mulberry, nectarine kernels peach kernels pear seeds, pecans plum kernels, quince, raspberry, sorghum can syrup, spinach – raw, sprouts (alfalfa, lentil, mung bean, buckwheat, garbanzo), squash seeds strawberries, walnut, and watercress.
Now remember, these really need to unprocessed and fresh or they will have lost the effects you are aiming for.
There is a lot more information which is too long for me to put here but they are in the books I have which are:- Food For Thought, by Phillip Day and Health Wars by the same author. You can order these on line at
>www.credence.org< This website also has newsletters on Health issues which can be real eye openers to say the least. I have some samples of these in my email that some one sent to me so if any are interested let me know.
If any of you would like more information on these book or what else might be in these two books I have named, feel free to contact me via email. I am not an expert but have read enough to tell me that we are eating our selves to death and being sucked in by the so called modernday medicines given to us to cure all. Is it though? I leave you to think that over.
Will be back later tonight.
Keep looking up cos He draweth nearer every day!!!!This is a long post and I hope it is acceptible. Thanks.

PTL, All!
I do not know if you saw my prayer request, but last night I believe I received a warning sign...
I had what I believed was a mini-stroke, (if that makes any sense-Sis. Cooper, or any other nurse here, is that possible?). I could not move my left arm, it was very painful for hours. I was scared, but prayed and rebuked infirmity off me.
I know this happened to warn me to take care of this temple. It is a blessing, a miracle, that I can still function, even though my arm is still sore. For hours last nite, I was just really tired and confused. It was very strange.
I told the kids they are gonna have to chip in more around the house and there will definitely be some changes in our diets around here.
I went to a health food store, Sis. Cooper, and bought some Noni juice and some herbal supplements. I am not going anywhere...
I shall not die, but shall live and declare the works of God!
I know I must be doing something right, b/c otherwise the enemy would not be coming at me this way. I never struggled with my health; I have no high blood pressure, no high cholesterol, no diabetes. Many are stunned when I tell them this, but I see it only as the handiwork of God, seeing that I am over 100 pounds overweight.
I thank God for what He is doing in my life!
Thank you for your concern, prayers, and counsel...

Concerning the Atkins diet....What the book doesn't tell you.
When people cut out carbs from their diet, they are cutting out essential nutrients that the body needs. Glycogen is one of them, and needed for energy. Glycogen comes from carbohydrates only, and there is very little in other foods. Glycogen converts to glucose, which your body uses for muscular movement, energy, and many other things. The problem with the Atkins diet is that fat cannot convert to glucose, however, muscle can. If the liver stores of glycogen are depleted, your body will convert muscle, NOT FAT, to glycogen, therefore the body feeds off itself, a condition known as ketosis. You will have a hard time finding someone who has followed this diet long term. When people start this diet, they generally feel better, as anyone will when they lose weight. Following this diet long term, however, will leave one weak and fatigued, in the long run, due to lack of muscle tone and the ketosis.
It has also been proven in diet studies that people who diet and include carbs lose more weight AND KEEP IT OFF, than any other diet that cuts out certain groups of food.

A couple of other things I wanted to address while reading back.
Canola oil when heated changes dramatically, as it doesn't take well to high heat. If you use this oil, you may notice a plastic burning smell, your food will taste funny, and there will be a film on your pans that is sticky and difficult to get off unless you take an SOS pad to it.
Another thing about gaining weight so quickly after one loses it. The bigger we get, the slower our metabolism gets. Also, since the body doesn't gain more fat cells after we are children, they gets used to being full. Adipose tissue (fat) cells just get bigger, they don't multiply. When they are so big for so long, and you lose weight, the body thinks that something is wrong. When someone goes "off" a diet, the fat will come back first, because the body is trying to get it back to "normal". This is why those who lose weight fast will gain it back more than those who lose it slowly. Also, if you lose weight while exercising to gain a little muscle tone, you might notice that you may gain weight, or the weight won't be coming off like it should. Let me ease your mind by telling you that muscle weighs more than fat, so it's possible to maintain weight and lose fat at the same time.
Concerning oils, you want to get oils that have the lowest amount of unsaturated fat in them. The unsaturated oils are:
Canola
Flaxseed
Safflower
Vegetable
Olive
Sunflower
Soybean
Corn
Peanut
Cottonseed
The saturated oils:
Palm
Palm kernel
Coconut
Saturated oils with cholesterol:
Chicken fat
Lard
Beef tallow
Butter
Saturated fats (and other fats) are also derived from various foods and food sources such as eggs, meats, nuts, milk and packaged foods where fat is added.
Vegetable, corn, and olive oil can take high heat for cooking and go very little changes when heated.
Anyway, hope this info helps someone.

Hi Sis.Searching,
Good info.I have many friends who have done the atkins diet only to be bigger than ever when it was over. The best thing a person could honestly do for themselves is to go on a whole foods diet and go back to good old fashioned cooking.Beans and rice may be poor mans food but honestly it is one of the best things you could put in your body. The thing we ought to be considering when we put something in our mouths is "Do I honestly want to put this in my body? and Is this the best things for me to eat?"
Hey you may slip from time to time but a person who is doing the right thing daily can slip and get away with it whereas a person who is eating horribly only gets sicker. We actually are as the old saying goes what we eat.One of the first people to come and live in community with us at Hope House has come in very poor health. In just a month this lady has a sheen to her skin and hair and the stressed out look on her face is gone.My dad came to live with us last December.Within three to four months his hair has turned from white to dark gray/silver.His skin looks so much better and we have hardly had to visit the M.D.I am making an appointment to bring him to a Naturapathic physician this week. For those of you who do not know this is an M.D. who specializes in alternative therapies such as herb/vitamin/diet therapy. What a person really needs to undergo after years of medicines is a doctor supervised detox. There are several books on the market that advise you how to use herbs/hotbaths/lymphatic massages/exercise/whole foods to live a lifestyle that eliminates toxins from your system.God gave us just what we need to live an abundant life.We just have to pray and seek.lv sis.c

Heres an article I found from Mayo Clinic:
Popular diets: The good, the fad and the iffy
A calorie is a calorie, no matter where it comes from. Most weight-loss diets help you to restrict calories in one way or another. Ideally the new routine gets you to eat less, eat healthier and exercise more. Seems simple, right? It is, in theory.
Your weight remains stable when you eat the same number of calories you use up. So, in theory, if you eat well and exercise — and in the process burn more calories than you consume — you lose weight.
But in practice it's easy to run into roadblocks. Adopting healthy eating and exercise habits can be difficult. It takes time and effort to work physical activity into your daily routine. A good diet can be your road map to safe and effective weight management. Conversely, a poor diet can leave you spinning your wheels — or, even worse, pose serious health problems.
Components of an effective weight-loss program must include:
A healthy diet that helps you select, prepare and eat healthy foods.
An exercise plan that helps you increase your activity throughout the day as well as incorporate a more rigorous exercise period several times every week.
Weight-loss programs come in many forms today. Some prey on the desire for a quick fix, and some of these diets do help you lose weight quickly — at least for a while. But maintaining a healthy weight isn't something that most people can manage quickly and maintain over the long haul. It's a process, and it can be tough, but it's not impossible. If you're ready to commit to lifestyle changes — eating healthier and being more physically active — then you're well on your way to achieving a healthier weight.
Weigh the facts — avoid the fads
The benefits of living at your healthy weight are numerous. You'll look better and feel better, and you'll probably live longer, too. But it's important to find a program that's safe and works effectively. Do some research before jumping into a new diet routine. If you have questions, talk to your doctor or nutritionist.
If you're considering a new weight-loss plan, evaluate it by the following statements to see how the program holds up. If one or more of these apply, raise a red flag.
Promises of a quick fix
Dire warnings from a single product or regimen
Claims that sound too good to be true
Simplistic conclusions drawn from a complex study
Recommendations based on a single study
Dramatic statements that are refuted by reputable scientific organizations
Lists of "good" and "bad" foods
Advice given to help sell a product
Opinions based on studies published without peer review
Recommendations from studies that ignore differences among individuals or groups
Here, in alphabetical order, is a bird's-eye view of some popular weight-loss plans — with a look at their premises, their founders or main backers, and what the scientific evidence shows. Take a look at each and use the list to figure out which are the healthiest programs to follow. Then talk with your doctor about a weight-loss program that's right for you.
The list is divided into two categories — weight management programs and diets, an important distinction to make. A diet helps you decide what and how much to eat, while weight management programs often include physical activity and behavior change in addition to your dietary plan.
Weight management programs
Body-for-Life (Bill Phillips)
Premise: A 12-week fitness plan in which you eat a high-protein diet and exercise regularly. Phillips, a bodybuilder and entrepreneur, emphasizes portions, not calorie counts. You eat six meals a day — each meal consisting of one portion of protein and one portion of carbohydrates — and add a vegetable to two of the meals. Once a week, you’re allowed a "cheat" day to splurge on your favorite foods.
Facts: This program's success is based on testimonials and anecdotal evidence. Although Body for Life emphasizes low-fat foods, the diet doesn't consist of enough variety for a truly healthy diet to meet all of your nutritional needs.
Lifestyle Program (Dean Ornish, M.D.)
Premise: Combines vegetarian and low-fat diets. Encourages high-fiber foods and limiting processed foods, such as cheese. Also recommends a daily exercise program. Dr. Ornish is the founder, president and director of the nonprofit Preventive Medicine Research Institute and has published numerous books about reversing heart disease through diet and exercise.
Facts: There's moderate evidence that cholesterol levels may decrease and that this diet is effective for weight loss. It combines — as all effective weight-loss programs do — a healthy eating plan with regular physical activity. There's also good evidence that it can treat and possibly prevent heart disease, though some people have questioned its practicality. Many people can't follow a 10 percent vegetarian diet long-term.
Mayo Clinic Healthy Weight Pyramid (Donald Hensrud, M.D.)
Premise: Studies show that both volume and weight of food play a role in feeling full. By choosing low-calorie energy-dense foods — large volume, large weight, but not many calories — you can still eat the same amount of food you're accustomed to eating and be full on fewer calories.
Facts: When you consume more foods that are low in energy density, it actually becomes more difficult to consume large amounts of calories. This promotes weight loss. Coupled with improved activity habits and behavior change, this approach focuses on improving health — and weight — over the long-term. This program emphasizes foods that are low in energy density: fruits and vegetables and healthier choices within each of the five food groups. Daily physical activity is emphasized for its role in both managing weight and improving health.
Mayo Clinic Healthy Weight Pyramid (click to enlarge)
Food pyramid: The shape of a healthy diet
Slim-Fast
Premise: Drink a Slim-Fast shake for breakfast, another for lunch, then eat a sensible dinner. Include exercise, such as 30 to 60 minutes of walking, and three snacks, such as two fruits and one Slim-Fast snack bar, a day.
Facts: Limited-choice diets — diets that require you to eat a certain food repeatedly — are historically difficult to maintain. It can be challenging to drink and eat the same food over and over again. However, research shows that the continued use of Slim-Fast products can sustain long-term weight loss in overweight and obese men and women. Participants in a university-based study improved several risk factors for diseases that are strongly associated with excess body weight — risk factors such as high systolic blood pressure and excess lipids, lipoproteins and blood sugar (blood glucose).
Diets
Carbohydrate Addict's LifeSpan Program (Drs. Richard and Rachael Heller)
Premise: Richard and Rachael Heller claim that an excess of insulin, the "hunger hormone," causes the carbohydrate addict to experience intense and recurring cravings, as well as the heightened ability to store fat. The affected person has a biological condition caused by a hormonal imbalance, which can be corrected by following their program. They advocate a very low carbohydrate diet throughout the daytime, and a single "reward meal" consisting of carbohydrate counterbalanced by vegetable and protein.
Facts: The effects of a low-carbohydrate diet may result in eating high-fat foods and, therefore, increase risk of heart disease, high cholesterol, liver and kidney damage, some cancers, and osteoporosis. How realistic is it never to have fruit or cereal for breakfast or a sandwich for lunch? The authors claim success through testimonial anecdotes and book sales. No scientifically validated studies suggest that this diet works.
Eat Right 4 Your Type (Dr. Peter D'Adamo)
Premise: The author, Dr. D'Adamo, claims that each blood type has its own unique antigen marker that reacts in negative ways with certain foods, and individuals have varying levels of stomach acidity and digestive enzymes that seem to correlate with blood type. This diet provides a detailed list of foods to eat or avoid, depending on your blood type.
Facts: Although you may find it comforting to have a list of foods to eat or avoid, there's no scientific evidence that diets should be based on blood type.
Suzanne Somers' Get Skinny on Fabulous Food (Suzanne Somers and associates)
Premise: Suzanne Somers — actress turned health-products merchandiser, selling wares from skin care goods to pasta — says that when proteins and carbohydrates are eaten together their enzymes cancel each other out, creating a halt in the digestion process and causing weight gain.
Facts: Reality check — many healthy, naturally occurring foods contain both carbohydrate and protein: nuts, milk, lentils, beans and whole-grain breads. This high-fat diet may put you at increased risk of coronary heart disease, high-cholesterol, liver and kidney damage, some cancers, and osteoporosis. There are no scientific studies to show that this diet works or is safe.

04-08-2003, 04:04 PM
New Diet Revolution (Robert C. Atkins, M.D.)
Premise: The 1997 book, Dr. Atkins' NEW Diet Revolution, suggests drastically reducing the intake of dietary carbohydrates to force your body to burn your reserve of stored fat for energy. This results in losing pounds and inches while still eating protein and fat-laden foods. Meat, eggs, butter and most cheeses can be eaten without restriction on this diet.
Facts: The effects of this high-protein diet actually may have you eating foods high in saturated fat, which may affect your blood cholesterol level and increase your risk of heart disease. There are no long-term studies to show that this diet works or is safe.
Picture Perfect Weight Loss (Dr. Howard M. Shapiro)
Premise: Dr. Shapiro's series of books feature photographs of food equations to help readers find low-calorie substitutes for the fattening foods that they crave. Pictures reveal that one candy bar contains the same amount of calories as 10 Popsicles. In addition to learning how one food's calorie content compares with another, readers are presented with correct serving sizes.
Facts: Pictures don't necessarily translate into action. While not a complete solution, Shapiro's comparisons may be a starting point to help put the foods you eat into a useful, nutritional perspective.
Protein Power Lifeplan (Michael R. Eades, M.D., and Mary Dan Eades, M.D.)
Premise: Protein Power Lifeplan, published in 1997, and its proponents claim that the human body has no physical needs for carbohydrates and that they should be severely limited in order to trick your body into burning fat without making you feel hungry. Authors Drs. Michael and Mary Dan Eades make the case that you cut most carbohydrates out of your diet. A few menu choices include smoked salmon and cream cheese omelets, sauteed jumbo shrimp, and double-patty burgers.
Facts: This high-protein diet may result in you eating high-fat foods and, therefore, increase your risk of heart disease, high-cholesterol, liver and kidney damage, some cancers, and osteoporosis. The authors claim success through testimonial anecdotes and book sales. No scientifically validated studies suggest that the Protein Power diet works.
Revolutionary Weight Control Program (Bob Arnot, M.D.)
Premise: In this diet, foods are considered drugs. Dr. Arnot, former chief medical editor for "NBC Nightly News," promotes a "feedforward" eating plan that teaches you in what order and at what times of day to eat foods to maximally control your weight, hunger and mood.
Facts: Though foods containing soluble fiber are mentioned, other carbohydrate-containing foods are limited and along with them, their vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals. No scientifically validated studies have been conducted on Dr. Arnot's eating plan. Dr. Arnot's validation for his book comes from his friends and relatives.
Sugar Busters! (H. Leighton Steward and associates)
Premise: Sugar Busters! recommends cutting sugar in refined and processed forms from the diet. This includes: potatoes, white rice, corn, white bread beets, carrots and sugar honey, corn syrup and foods containing them. The authors claim that sugar is toxic to the body, causing the body to release insulin and store excess sugar as body fat.
Facts: Long-term effects of high-protein, high-fat intake may include kidney and liver damage, heart disease and cancer. Sugar Busters! is supported by testimonials of the authors' believers and anecdotal claims. Its validity is based on opinions, not proven facts.
Volumetrics (Barbara J. Rolls and associates)
Premise: As the name implies, Volumetrics emphasizes eating high-volume, low-calorie foods and thereby getting full faster on fewer calories. High-volume foods take up more space, take a long time to eat and are often high in water content. You're still getting full, but on fewer calories, which adds up to weight loss.
Facts: This program is based on research showing that eating high-volume, low-calorie foods can be an effective tool to decrease calorie intake, but the most effective weight-loss programs balance a healthy eating plan and exercise.
The Zone diet (Barry Sears, Ph.D.)
Premise: In his 1995 book, Enter the Zone, Sears writes that to enter "the zone" you need to eat the proper quantities of food, in the proper "macronutrient blocks" at prescribed times. Meals should contain carbohydrates, proteins and fats in the ratio of 40 percent, 30 percent, 30 percent, respectively. A sample meal may be 2 cups of pasta (carbohydrate), a 3-ounce piece of steak (protein), and a small handful of nuts or other fats to round out the meal.
Facts: Although not as restricted as other high-protein, low-carbohydrate diets, the typical zone diet contains less than 1,000 calories, which may result in an inability to meet vitamin and mineral needs for most people. The Zone diet has not been validated scientifically. There's no scientific reason for eating set combinations of foods at set times.

Great information. I also want to add about the Adkins diet, which I believe I touched on in my post above is that fat stores can be converted to energy, but not to glucose. Glucose is essential to helping convert that fat to energy, and is also necessary for many things, including muscle movement and absorption of some vitamins and other stuff. Fat doesn't convert to glucose, but muscle will. The Atkins diet will help you lose weight, sure, but it will be muscle mass lost, and the fat will remain.

The best diet I know is whole foods.Drop the additives where you can and get off sugar and refined foods.I have learned to use natural sweetners instead and now I love them. Here are the names of a few:
Stevia...has fiber
Sucanat...my personal fav
Turbinado Sugar...
Organic Sugar...nice taste
Honey...I like the light colored one...straw honey I believe its called.
Barley Malt
Fructose...too much will send you running....hint hint
Piccalado I believe its called.I don't think I am spelling it right.
It comes from Mexico and is shaped into cones. Its all natural cane sugar but beware you may sit and eat the whole cone.I buy this in the Walmart Produce Dept.It is put out by a company called
Melissas. They make market lots of organics.

One of my very best friends lost her toy poodle last year to old age. She had Sparkie, who was an apricot poodle from the time she was born. They had bred her dog, her mamma, Monique.
This past christmas her fiance and parents surprised her with an apricot poodle puppy girl. Can't remember her name right now, but she is soooo cute...and a handful! She can jump so high! My friend, whose motto has always been "love me, love my dog", says that she thinks her fiance loves the puppy more than she now. LOL You can tell she is his baby...

Sis. Cooper:
I just read your reply to my last post.
I am eating better and drinking the Noni juice, feel better, too.
Been claiming the promises of God over my health and body.
I am under a lot of stress in my personal life, and the enemy is bringing on the attacks like crazy.
Even through it all, it is amazing how much joy God is giving me! The joy of the Lord is indeed my strength!
Keep me and my family in you all prayers, as I have to go to court twice within the next couple of weeks or so, Wednesday, and May 5, that is on a Monday.
I will follow up with a doctor; but I am believing God to totally heal my body.

Hello, Sisters, I didn't know which thread this should go in...howp you find it useful!
Drinking two glasses of Gatorade can relieve headache pain almost immediately-without the unpleasant side effects caused by traditional pain relievers.
Did you know that Colgate toothpaste makes an excellent salve for burns. Before you head to the drugstore for a high-priced inhaler filled with mysterious chemicals, try chewing on a couple of curiously strong Altoids peppermints. They'll clear up your stuffed nose.
Achy muscles from a bout of the flu? Mix 1 Tablespoon of horseradish in 1/2 cup of olive oil. Let the mixture sit for 30 minutes, then apply it as a massage oil, for instant relief for aching muscles.
Sore Throat?? Just mix 1/4 cup of vinegar with 1/4 cup of honey and take 1 Tablespoon six times a day. The vinegar kills the bacteria.
Cure urinary tract infections with alka-seltzer. Just dissolve two tablets in a glass of water and drink it at the onset of the symptoms. Alka-Seltzer begins eliminating urinary tract infections almost instantly-even though the product has never been advertised for this use.
Eliminate puffiness under your eyes.....All you need is a dab of preparation H, carefully rubbed into the skin, avoiding the eyes. The hemorrhoid ointment acts as a vasoconstrictor, relieving the swelling instantly. NOTE: Only the kind made in Canada has the proper ingredient nowadays - the U.S.D.A. banned it for us.
Honey remedy for Skin Blemishes......Cover the blemish with a dab of honey and place a band-aid over it. Honey kills the bacteria, keeps the skin sterile, and speeds healing. Works overnight.
Listerine therapy for toenail fungus....Get rid of unsightly toenail fungus by soaking your toes in Listerine mouthwash. The powerful antiseptic leaves your toenails looking healthy again.
Easy eyeglass protection....To prevent the screws in eyeglasses from loosening, apply a small drop of Maybelline Crystal Clear nail polish to the threads of the screws before tightening them.
Coca-Cola cure for rust...Forget those expensive rust removers. Just saturate an abrasive sponge with Coca Cola and scrub the rust stain. The phosphoric acid in the coke is what gets the job done.
Cleaning liquid that doubles as bug killer....If menacing bees, wasps, hornets, or yellow jackets get in your home and you can't find the insecticide, try a spray of Formula 409. Insects drop to the ground instantly.
Smart splinter remover.....just pour a drop of Elmers Glue-all over the splinter, let dry, and peel the dried glue off the skin. The splinter sticks to the dried glue.
Hunt's tomato paste boil cure....Cover the boil with Hunt's tomato paste as a compress. The acids from the tomatoes soothe the pain and bring the boil to a head.
Balm for broken blisters.....To disinfect a broken blister, dab on a few drops of Listerine....a powerful antiseptic.
Heinz vinegar to heal bruises...Soak a cotton ball in white vinegar and apply it to the bruise for 1 hour. The vinegar reduces the blueness and speeds up the healing process.
Kills fleas instantly. Dawn dishwashing liquid does the trick. Add a few drops to your dog's bath and shampoo the animal thoroughly. Rinse well to avoid skin irritations. Goodbye fleas!
Rainy day cure for dog odor....Next time your dog comes in from the rain, simply wipe down the animal with Bounce or any dryer sheet, instantly making your dog smell springtime fresh.
Eliminate ear mites....All it takes is a few drops of wesson corn oil in your cat's ear. Massage it in, then clean with a cotton ball. Repeat daily for 3 days. The oil soothes the cat's skin, smothers the mites, and accelerates healing.
Vaseline cure for hairballs.....To prevent troublesome hairballs, apply a dollop of vaseline petroleum jelly to your cat's nose. The cat will lick off the jelly, lubricating any hair in its stomach so it can pass easily through the digestive system.
Quaker Oats for fast pain relief....It's not just for breakfast anymore! Mix 2 cups of Quaker Oats and 1 cup of water in a bowl and warm in the microwave for 1 minute, cool slightly, and apply the mixture to your hands for soothing relief from arthritis pain.

This is a great thread to reply to. If I can recommend anything to kick start a weight program, it would simply be "Walking" . If you could really try and walk up to an hour a day, the benefits are great! I too take Noni Juice, along with Flaxseed oil and Fish oil, and a good multi-vitamin. I too drink Vanilla soy milk (I love it) and enjoy my Kashi breakfast cereals! Over the holidays all my cookies were organic and my son just gobbled them up! I use the organic sugar and whole wheat flour, and noone knew! They loved them! I dont like to diet, just have been working on totally changing my eating habits, along with asking the Lord to help me, and lost 23lbs last year. I have 25 more to go to be where I would like to be! I done weight watchers last year and lost about 20 pounds on it. I agree with Sister Lisa it is very easy to follow. I got discouraged though and gave in to fast food and sweet cravings. I ended up gaining back about 10 pounds.
But I have got back on my diet since the first of this year. I have already lost 6 pounds. I could probably stand to lose about 58 pounds. I am 4 foot 11, I think my ideal weight is about 123. I am currently at 180.
I use the Sugar in the Raw for my coffee, and I switched to drinking diet colas instead of reg. cola. I also use either the Lean Cuisine or the Smart Ones dinners for my lunch at work.

I used to eat very healthy I go to the vitamin store for all that good stuff to be honest with you I was a whole 120lbs and felt real good about myself but, to be honest it can get expensive health food at least for me. Since I've had my last 2 babies 21 month old Eliana and 6 month old Searah I feel over weight and it can be difficult to get it off.
