SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - For the first time, a majority of Californians support more drilling for oil off their state's coast, a poll showed on Thursday, underscoring anxiety caused by high gasoline prices.
But a large majority of Californians also still want a push toward developing alternative energy sources and highly fuel-efficient vehicles.
The poll this month by the Public Policy Institute of California found 51 percent of Californians in favor of expanding offshore drilling, up 10 points from a year earlier.
It was the first time the group has recorded more Californians in favor of offshore drilling than opposed.
Expanded oil drilling has been a political taboo in environmentally conscious California. But the surge in gasoline prices and politics have helped change attitudes, especially among Republicans.
"President Bush has been out there calling for more drilling ... which may be making it more politically acceptable for Republicans to support this," said Mark Baldassare, chief executive of the Public Policy Institute of California.

Looks Like the democrats defend crude shortages and high fuel prices.
They fell asleep and I see people vote with their wallets. Global warming is a non issue. We see many want cheaper gas and they feel pain at the pump. Dems are taking august off so they can spread their carbon footprints and come back and defend greenhouse dogmas in september.

To develop new drilling sites isn't an overnight thing that will cause gas prices to plummet next week, in fact, it may be several years before new drilling sites woiuld make and impact. To the populace it looks like a right now fix... it isn't.
We may need to as projections state that fossil fuel will still make up 80% of our energy uses in 2030. Oil isn't going away anytime soon.
The issue on offshore drilling and opening fields in the Alaska wilderness is not prices, it is our dependence on foriegn oil.
We need to develop our own simply because right now OPEC holds a sword of Damocles over our head...I mean we worry about Iran, but what would hapen if the fundamentalists of Suadi Arabia, and they are many, decide the Al Saud familiy is corrupt (they are) and that they have been in power long enough?

No, it was to introduce a level of chaos into the middle east, preventing an Iran who's military strength is growing daily from invading and conquering an weak Iraq under Saddam and taking Iraqs natural resources as it's own while unifying the Iraq Shiites with their Iranian brothers, Thus beginning to pave the way for a pan-arabic super-state. Also ti give us a strengthened foothold from which to take care of Iran if need be. And the fact that we were less than pleased with how our boy Saddam turned out and felt like taking him down by a neck.
Oh, if we leave that place prematurely, like Oblahmuh wants, that will happen anyhow.
I never liked or voted for GWB, but he isn't nearly as stupid as he looks.
History repeats itself. Rome's last great emporer was a guy named Trajan,
GWB is our Trajan. It is all down hill from here boys and girls.
Oh, GWB isn't any more responsible for the faltering economy and gas prices now than Bill Clinton was responsible for the economic prosperity during his terms. That is a thing of cycles and all ANY leader of a single country can do is try to nudge the cycle upward. In good time the president gets credit, in bad the blame. In the grand global scheme of things he doesn't make it happen either way. He rolls with it like everyone else.

I believe we invaded Iraq because the US has been looking for a way to establish a permanent military presence in the Middle East for a good long time. I also believe the Bush Administration took full advantage of what the mindset was in America after 9/11, to sell us a bill of goods. If the true enemy were Iran, then they should have come clean with the American people from the start and invaded Iran, instead of misleading us into thinking the invasion was over WMDs in Iran. I believe the American people can handle the truth and don't need to be manipulated into going into war under false pretenses. First it was because of WMDs. Then we had to stay there because of the fighting amongst the Sunnis and Shiites. Now we have to stay there because we are fighting the radicals from Iran. Where does it end? What will be next year's excuse for staying even longer? I'm sick of the whole thing and fed up with politicians who are under the thumbs of special interests. It's time for our men and women to come home. Let the Iraqis stand or fall on their own.
The Iranian government isn't nearly as popular with its people as it likes to think. Some laser guided missiles could have probably solved this problem with Iran a few years ago, and we could have saved hundreds of billions of wasted dollars your children and mine are going to have to pay back. I can not stand how corrupt Washington has become. Bush and Cheney's oil baron buddies are cashing in bigtime on the ignorage of the American people.
BTW, I agree with you on the economy. The President doesn't really have much say in where the economy goes. Our government sure can make it easy for banks and the Wall Street crowd to rip us off, though. Then, when their hairbrained schemes fail, the government steps in and bails them out, reaching even deeper into our pockets in the process.

Halliburton is not a driller or producer.
It seems people don't know the Oil business. They do acid fracks and other well services. they also are rebuilding many utilities that the Muslims destroyed. this done by KBR. They manufacture, develop software and render research and other services. Every time I see a link between Cheney and Halliburton and some wild oil claim, I know I am reading about someone that doesn't know any about the oil business.
Your judgemental claim about (LIAR bush ) tells us you don't support america but suppport the liberals that hate America. I actually encountered Pres Bush's company Harken energy when they were a mediocre producer in the Permian basin. He had better luck with baseball, but the Liberals don't study history.
I know for a fact that Clinton did more favors for the chicken business in Arkansas than Bush has done for oil. It just isn't as glamorous.
Bush is a fine President. He is in a situation that can't plese everbody. When empty suits like Obama come along with their track records of corruption and contacts of low moral character, look out. Rezco makes Halliburton look like a church camp.

They have that record because I have chosen to do business with them. The laws in this country protect me from unlawful search and seizure. Coadie, if the rule of law means absolutely nothing to you, then don't worry about what the Executive Branch of our government does. I, however, would like to keep the rights the Constitution gives me as an American citizen, and do not appreciate an Administration that thinks it is above the law. What Bush did was highly illegal. He authorized the NSA to get access to those records without a warrant. Here's a link, if you care to read some more about it:

With that, I will be saying, "Adios" to you, Coadie. It's become obvious to me that you and I are not going to get along very well. The whole point of disagreeing is to find what you do agree on. I don't mind disagreeing with people on issues, but when I find myself disagreeing on every post with someone, it lets me know there's no point in continuing the dialogue. So, I wish you well, but the conversing stops with this post. Buh-bye.

I will give you three examples how the left is nosy and has no respect for the laws or privacy..
case:
1. The ACLU is in a non stop battle to get Whitehouse e-mails. They are not a government agency. If Dems want "privacy" it sure doesn't look like it.
2.
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — A state trial judge dismissed a lawsuit late last week filed against Gov. Matt Blunt over access to backup e-mail records.
But the July 11 ruling tossing out the case was put on hold for 10 days to give the special investigators seeking access to e-mails from the governor’s office an opportunity to amend their lawsuit.
The suit was filed in the Capitol’s home of Cole County by Mel Fisher, one of three investigators selected by Democratic Attorney General Jay Nixon to look into allegations that the Republican governor’s office violated the Sunshine Law by deleting e-mails. The investigation team is seeking access to copies of backup e-mail records at no cost................Here the creeps want to punish a governor for not letting them see all his messages.

For Iglesias and the others, it was clear that "the time had come to set the record straight." They began telling their stories to reporters and eventually, on March 6, 2007, Iglesias, Lam, McKay, Cummins and Bogden all testified before Congress, defending their records and noting previous strong evaluations.
A political pitbull group that wants private information out in the open. They will beat this for years more. It seems they are not an arm of government and so they have no authority. Leftwing liberals.
These are the same hypocrits that are afraid there is software that triggers an alert when certain terrorists call certain known terroritsts. I know the law on this and have caught long distance fraud in my company. I know I can use records to fire abusers.

I never heard of him, but I heard the theory that it is basically meant to cause a class war against the have's and have nots. I'm divided on the issue. On the one hand, we have all these cars, emitting so much pollution every day, all all this consuming and trashing done by so many people that it is actually foolish to suggest that it is not affecting the environment at all. Common sense will tell you it is. Just look at China.
If you took someone from a few centuries ago in a time machine and plopped him down in 2008, he would die from all the poison. Not just from the air, but from the processed food. Our bodies have adapted to it, thankfully.
On the other hand, I don't think we are powerful enough to make an impact on the planet. This planet will destroy us in some manner and take care of itself before we destroy it.
I don't think we have to worry about pollution being the death of us. I think mankind's population is going to become greatly reduced in the form of a plague.

So we aren't getting the oil? I was lead to believe we were. That's too bad, because we certainly SHOULD get the oil. In this day and age, oil is power, and if the other countries (even our "allies") get this power, I guarantee they won't be as willing to help us out as we have been in helping them out in times past. The U.S. has always been the one's to show up with military/ humanitarian aid when a crisis hits. Who shows up for us? Oil is power, and we need to horde as much of it away as possible for the future.
That's one of the reasons I don't support us tapping into our own oil. Yes, it would lower gas prices temporarily, but if we just buckle down a bit, learn to drive less, walk/bike more whenever possible, it will fare better for us in the long run. In the not too distant future, after the rest of the world has spent their oil like theres no tommorrow, they will come crawling to us with our oil horded away. It's just like saving money.
We've been spending money and consuming resources like there's no tommorrow and just having a grand old time partying away, but it won't last. It's important to keep in mind that this is the generation of no waiting and spend it now, spend it fast, and party hard.

We were all in better shape back then too. :)
Seriously though, the next time your out driving, take a look at all the cars, suv's and big trucks in particular, that have just one person in the whole vehicle. When you think of that, in addition to the fact that many will travel in those cars and trucks just to go one mile down the road, it really puts it in perspective how incredibly lazy and arrogant we are. Add on fast food to that and you have the perfect recipe for an obesity epidemic the likes of which mankind has never seen. And EVERYBODY wants to blame it on their hormones. Hormones my hind end!!!!!!!!
