Your'e kidding?
Now I've heard everything!
Well, maybe not. We'll see what others have to say or think about this.
To my knowledge, there is nothing about that in the bible.
It seems that for safety's sake, or even personal preference, the length is up to the person.
Sis, I think this is a legitimate question. I have seen some women with long fingernails that use them in a sensual way to attract attention to themselves. The length of the fingernails affects the movements of the hands much in the same way that certain types of jewelry do. My advice to you would be to pray about it and let the Lord guide you. Don't let anyone tell you this is a silly question either, because the only silly questions to God are the ones we aren't willing to ask.

Ack! What next?
How or why in the world would it be wrong to have short nails? I love longer nails (not too long of course) but I keep mine fairly short for practical reasons. How on earth does a woman use long fingernails in a sensual way?
And as far as I know there is no teaching in the Bible on length of fingernails.

I never cease to be amazed on this GNC! Glad I'm not the only one.
Those fake long nails many women today wear, they are for looks only. I'd think they'd be so uncomfortable, and imagine getting one caught on something  .
People are much safer with short nails., when I kept them 'longer' as a teen, my brothers were very afraid of me! They called me "cat woman"...they're good weapons! :D

I would wear them long, if I could get them all long at once. I am a hard workin' woman, ;) and I am forever tearing one of them.. I really don't think God cares what length your nails are. I think it is personal preference.

Felicity,
Same here, although there are those who immediately 'point the finger' ...we have the right to be amazed, or thrown back, even tickled, by a question never voiced before., that does not mean we mean wrong!
WHO? ME?
I'm not mean, just "tuf".... :D
In a nice way, of course! Remember (some of ya'll might) that Xerf himself once said that about me [mem-O-ries]; an "18wheeler" he called me, who runs over you-but sweetly! Hehehe! Sure miss that character.
My nails can't grow w/o chipping off (as I'm always working)..so I have no choice but to keep 'em short. I don't see how anyone types with long nails.

Hi Friends,
I would love to have all my nails long at once.I just get them long shaped neatly then I go to work for my seven days on and they break off one at a time.I used to have them manicured but it was costing too much.I at one time had those acrylic nails but they destroyed my nailbeds. In fact when I had them removed they had not only caused my nails to be super thin.I mean thinner than you can even imagine but my nails were even clubbed because of the lack of oxygen to the nailbed.I would have them done natural and unpolished so they looked like my own.But honestly the price also for having them done was too much in a months time. Now my nails actually look even better than the acrylic ones I used to wear.I would never put those on again.I learned my lesson the hardway. And oh yeah when you go to have them removed they just take out this nail thingie and pull them off...It was so painful.I thought I was undergoing chinese torture.lv sis.c

...there's so much to take in here!
I've worn acrylic nails for about 3 years. I choose natural looking "American" tips and feel it's no more a "vanity" issue for me than hairspray, deodarant and toothpaste are.
My own nails grow -- but they curl downward. (They didn't always, its related to a medical condition I have.) The only way to prevent it is to cut them to the quick...which means scratching an itch, washing my hair, everything is hard with no nails.
I was worried about damaging my nails irreparably. True, they are extremely then when the acrylics come off, but that's because they have to be "etched" in order for the acrylic to adhere. It just takes time for the etched bed to grow off and your nails return to normal.
Yes, it is an expense, but I'm pretty low-maintenance in other ways. Besides -- it's an opportunity to witness to the technicians (most of whom are Vietnamese in my area) and other customers. Many's the time I've had a chance to listen to someone's trials and burdens and promise to pray for them. It hasn't resulted in anyone coming to church with me yet, but it could happen.

Is the shape of your nails thyroid related?
No -- at least I don't think so -- it's actually listed as a symptom of fibromyalgia. I don't know what one has to do with the other, but it was a gradual onset sort of thing, just as the fibro was.

03-12-2004, 10:11 AM
Just a question but have you been thyroid tested? Just a normal md won't do it correctly. You have to have a panel done by a endocrynologist. The reason I am asking is that many hormone related things are dx'd as fibromyalgia.
But I am sure you have researched high and low since you have to deal with it.Its just the nurse in me.lv sis.c

Thank the Lord for the nurses among us!
I have not seen an endocrynologist, although, I probably should. I'm borderline diabetic and have such a sluggish metabolism that losing weight is a special ordeal for me. (That sounds whinier than it is.)
I have had some thyroid testing by my MD....because he's seen my struggles and is sympathetic...I don't remember specifically what tests....I do remember the 24 hour cortisol test, tho'....;)
I'm actually the one who diagnosed myself...with the Lord's help! I sat down at the computer one day and went to Google "chronic fatigue syndrome". For no reason my brain can come up with -- if not the Hand of God -- I typed in fibromyalgia. One of the first links I saw was a lengthy list of symptoms. By the time I read to the bottom of that page the front of my blouse was soaked with tears!!
I printed it out and took a pink highlighter to the pages!! Then I made an appt. with my MD. He looked it over and said he was convinced enough to skip all the elimination tests and start me on a basic treatment. There was instantaneous improvement.
I've been in a holding pattern for about 6 years. And I'm content. The Lord is good and saved my soul -- whatever happens to the body really doen't matter, does it? When I hurt when I move, I just let it be a reminder to thank Him and praise Him and pray for those who can't move!
When I get moved and locate a new doctor, I might ask about a referral to an endocrinologist...I'm sure I'd feel lots better if the weight could be controlled. Thanks for thinking about me, Sister.

I had never heard anyone make an issue of nail length before until about a month ago. A very judgmental "Pentecostal" woman (whom I'd never met before) was pointing out the faults in EVERYONE who she laid eyes on - skirts weren't long enough (even though skirts were just above the ankle, they had to be below), she was checking everyone's hair length, etc.
She looked at my nails and told me to go cut them off - they were too long. But the odd thing was that she had glitter all over her face - talk about not beholding the beam in your own eye. :grumble:
I do wear my nails long but not too long. There is something in my genetics that causes me to have tough, strong nails. They're not as tough as they used to be after having children but one time (b.c.) I was trying to clip my nail and was having the hardest time - I couldn't cut it. My grandmother's were the same way.
I see nothing Biblically wrong with long or short nails - the Bible is silent therefore we should be too. :)

That poor dear!!! What a burden and responsibility to have to point out faults like that!! How it must cut into her prayer and Bible reading time!! :grumble:
<ouch> I always bite my tongue when I have it shoved that far in my cheek.
Really though, what can you do for people like that except pray. PRAY HARD.
My first thought is "Are they depressed?" When I'm tormented by the spirit of depression my FIRST HINT that I'm slipping into it is that I see nothing but flaws. Now, usually its the spot on the carpet that won't come out or the cobwebs I can't reach or the doorknob my sweet hubby keeps putting off replacing. When I was running from the truth, these things would so overwhelm me I'd end up bedridden with depression!
Praise the Lord -- now I just take it as a sign to drop to my knees.

I think I know the type. I recently came back to my "home church" after being on the other side of the state.
This church is SO blessed...I can't even describe the revival we're in!! One Sunday last summer the Spirit moved morning and evening and a powerful altar service took place without there being any preaching.
I ran to Wal-Mart on Monday morning and smack into an older sister who works as a greeter there. I didn't know her personally, since she'd come after I moved away. But had seen her enough on return visits that I knew she was one of "ours".
Before I could get "Hello" out of my mouth she hit me with...
"Well, did the pastor ever get around to preaching last night? I got tired and left."
I was a little taken aback...."Um, no, he didn't preach but he baptized four and several got the Holy Ghost."
"Well", she went on, "we've got to get to hearing some WORD, or we'll all be lost. People have got to hear some preaching. You can shout to the preaching, you know!?! Word's gonna get out -- already has got out -- we ain't nuthin' but a "shoutin' church"!!"
I just stood back, holding my tongue and nodding when appropriate. When her rant started to wind down I piped up with, "Well, Sister, I've just spent 3 years in a church and never saw anyone shout, so I'm happy to be in a "shouting church"!"
I learned later that this woman has "made the rounds" of several churches...she has some real problems with certain issues and will stay in one until the preachin' starts getting a little too close for comfort and then she runs to another church.
Sad.

Preaching against deodorant and hair spray? Oh my goodness I would think there would be so much more important things to preach about.
Sisters I would love to have longer nails. But my nails usually break off, or else I get a pick in them and end up biting the nail off. I have recently bought some nail strengthener from Avon, so I will see how this works.

Well,
Believe it or not sisters, the first time I received a 'rebuke' about long nails (I used to get the acrylic tips and french manicures done), I was not in an Apostolic church! It was a lady married to a Baptist minister who saw me doing praise and worship, and she told me (in a polite way, of course) that my nails my cause someone to stumble.
So I stopped getting them done. I never even thought about it until she mentioned it. Plus, it just got to be too inconvenient and expensive. So I wear my average length nails with no polish.
I guess it matters only if the spirit in which you wear long nails, what is it? Are you being seductive, or you just want pretty hands with long nails? That can only be determined after the Spirit. But I would not go as far as to say everyone who wears acrylic tips are seductive or whatever.

I sure hope not.
I just want "girly" lookin' hands! My mama had beautiful hands, slender fingers and lovely oval shaped nails. My sister has her hands.
I have Louisiana Plow Boy hands like my Daddy!!! Fat, broad, with really wide flat fingernails. Due to a medical condition, they curl downward which means I have to keep them cut to the quick or heavily polished.
When I was out of church I loved them long and painted dark. When I got back in church I thought it would be cut to the quick for the rest of my life! I was prepared to even wear gloves, but I can't find them to fit my hands (my DADDY'S hands, I should say!) LOL
About 3 years ago my youngest talked me into trying acrylics. I get an American manicure on them, which isn't as bright as the French, they really do look like my own nails did before they started to curl under. I don't wear them too long or try to be seductive, just long enough so they can't be mistaken for a man's hands.
If that's vanity, I pray the Lord convicts me of it. Until then, I witness to the little Vietnamese lady who does them and tip her generously.

This sort of surprised me. Has anyone heard of getting acrylic nails for your toenails? I was in the kitchen at church and some of the young ladies, 17-19 year olds were discussing have their toenails done. Now I'm not judging them because these are some of the most praying teenagers that I have been around but I had no idea that they even made "toe nails".

Sis Pam,
First of all referring to the lady at wal mart! A shoutin church after being in one that doesnt, uh huh boy I am for it! Love the Word but love the worship too! Last time we were there the exact thing happened. It was awesome! The choir walked down out of the choir loft and the hg hit one of the young ladies and she took off , shortly the whole church was just enveloped in the spirit. Who knows maybe we were there same time and I didnt see ya :wah:. As for nails. I have read my bible and I tell ya, aint found it yet! So short, long, yours or someone elses, all he wants is our praise! My pastor told me absolutely NOT! He came to me later and informed me that he had been wrong and that it wasnt in the bible it wasnt an issue of my salvation that I was only wanting to do it for most of the same reasons as you. My hands dont look like a womans hands. My nails will not grow past the quick and it looks horrible.
The next day when I went to have them done, there were 4 other ladies from our church there at the exact time as I was!!! Go figure!! And I havent missed out on a thing having them or not having them , I can still worship I can still shout I can still dance I can still function or not (which i wish I could do more often, not function) So when I need my me time I go and get them done and I feel more human for a change and I look like a lady with ladies hands instead of someone who has a little mans hands LOL.

Just read the post on the nails.
Being backslidden for two years (as I WAS), I can see where the idea of sensuality would come in - acrylic nails, etc.
My personal opinion (that's what these are, right??? just personal opinions?) is that there would be nothing wrong with well groomed fingernails of moderate length. Nothing wrong at ALL with short nails. It's nice to keep them trimmed and groomed. Those dealing with money (bank tellers, etc) are more conscious of their nails, I think. I know I have been. Pride? well, not as the world knows it :)
I'd say if you have convictions about the nail length, then listen to that inner voice.
As far as scripture? i agree with the others... I know of no scripture against short nails - as you asked about. God Bless and keep listening to HIS voice!

I know this is old but I just re-read through this thread and was wondering what you meant when you said that your nails "club"? I have never heard of that before and I wear Gel Nails and I was considering switching to Acrylic because it is cheaper. Anyways, I was curious about this.
NanaRenan
10-17-2005, 03:29 PM
Interesting that this came back up now.
I'm not sure what is meant by "clubbed" either.
I have grown my fake nails off this summer and am "au natural" at this time. I had no problems whatsoever and after 4 years of constant nails, they look the same as they did before.
I couldn't justify the expense any longer. We're sacrificing a lot of things to put my GrandDoll in private school. As much as I dislike the way may nails look, it's a small thing to give up for such a good cause.
Melody
10-19-2005, 05:08 PM
Clubbed fingers are the result of lack of oxygen to the extremity and the development of compensatory increased capillaries.
I cannot see how artificial nails can result in this development. This is usually the result of chronic poor circulation such as in children with heart defects.

Surprisingly,
I have had this subject broached to me before when doing praise and worship in CT. Not in apostolic church, either!
I was getting the acrylic tips on them and they were kinda long. The minister told me that they were atrracting too much attention to my hands (I use my hands a lot when I sing). So she suggested I get them cut shorter.
I was like "What?"
I did it out of respect.
I don't do the acrylic tips now. My own nails have always been longer than average. I had the breakage problem, too. A former co-worker suggested that I just have acrylic added to my own nails to give them strength so that they won't break. And I never liked the odd colors or weird designs. One nail tech told me that she was getting a machine where you can get pictures of your kids lasered onto your nails!
Now that's crazy!
I always do american or french manicure. I lean more towards french.
I do it because it makes me feel more feminine. And seeing the struggles I had in that area at one time, it is a good idea. They are cheaper than getting a full set.
I absolutely LOVE pedicures, though!!!!
The very first time I got one I was like 'Should this young lady be doing this to me w/o a marriage license???' LOL :yeah: :D LOL
Very relaxing, they are!
Every lady should treat themselves to a pedicure. It is ministry to ourselves, ladies! We deserve to treat ourselves every now and then!
If you are a guy and have a wife or wife in the making, then treat her to a pedicure!
I guarantee she will be glad you did!!!

I thought this was an interesting discussion, and wondered if anyone would like to address this Thread concerning the Long and Short of Nails.
I personally think long dressed up nail do draw attention to the person wearing them.

I think that if your nails are more than half an inch long it's too long... meaning past the fingertip.... long is pretty, but past a certain point is excessive, and I think, kinda gross. I'm a massage therapist so mines really can't get that long or I'd be scratching my clients! HAHA! But, I really like mines to be longer cause I've got chunky fingers so in makes my hands look prettier... yes, I'm oh so vain... hehehe, jk jk jk!!!!

Growing up, we were always taught that the free edge of the nail (meaning the length of your nail) should ideally be half the length of the nail plate (the hard part of the nail that you can see).

I do not like long finger nails for myself. I don't let them get anywhere near past my finger tips. I see some ladies with nails that look like bird talons! I wonder how in the world they can function in daily routines with nails that long??

I can't believe they do. I've seen some women who use their thumb pad and then press the next fingers to the first joint in the finger and try to keep their fingers all straight out do do their work. :Wow: :Wow:

I dont think the nails are very attractive once they get too long. I keep mine somewhat long enough to shape nicely but thats about the length of them
