New York City's oldest library says one of its ledgers shows that the president has racked up 220 years' worth of late fees ($300000) on two books he borrowed, but never returned.
NEW YORK - If George Washington were alive today, he might face a hefty overdue library fine.
New York City's oldest library says one of its ledgers shows that the president has racked up 220 years' worth of late fees on two books he borrowed, but never returned.
One of the books was the "Law of Nations," which deals with international relations. The other was a volume of debates from Britain's House of Commons.
Both books were due on Nov. 2, 1789.
New York Society Library head librarian Mark Bartlett says the institution isn't seeking payment of the fines, but would love to get the books back.
The ledger also lists books being taken out by other founding fathers, including Alexander Hamilton, Aaron Burr and John Jay.
The entry on Washington simply lists the borrower as "president."

Traveling tabby gets free trip home

CHICAGO - No one knows how a tabby cat named Charles traveled the 1,300 miles from his New Mexico home to Chicago, but he's set for a complimentary flight home on American Airlines in a carrier donated by an Albuquerque business.
Charles disappeared about eight months ago while his owner was out of town and a friend was caring for him.
"Oh, I was crushed, and I found out while I was away volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, and I was so upset because I was in New Orleans so there was nothing I could do," said Robin A., of Albuquerque.
Then last week, Alex received a call telling her Chicago Animal Care and Control had picked up her wandering cat as a stray. Staffers reached out to Alex after finding that Charles had a tracking microchip embedded between his shoulder blades, said the agency's executive director, Cherie T.
But Alex said she could not afford the round-trip ticket to Chicago to bring Charles home, so she was afraid he might be euthanized.
Enter fellow Albuquerque resident Lucien S. He said he has a tabby cat who strongly resembles Charles and was moved when his mother sent him an online story about Alex and her pet.
Most importantly, Lucien was on his way to Chicago on Thursday for a wedding, so he said he would go to the shelter, pick up Charles and bring him back to New Mexico. He has made all the arrangements for Charles' return, including getting a company to donate a cat carrier and American Airlines to waive the cat's travel fee.
Charles is definitely ready for his next adventure. "He's in good condition," she said. "He needs a good brushing. He's got a little bit of a cold - a little bit of an upper respiratory infection - but otherwise he's in great condition."

Man had pea plant growing in lung
MONTHS of coughing had Ron Sveden worried that something was very wrong, but the Massachusetts, man never expected doctors to tell him he had plant growing in his lungs.
Fits of coughing and a lingering feeling of listlessness sent Mr Sveden to see several doctors in Brewster.
Rounds of tests confirmed he did not have lung cancer or some kind of tumour. One finally noticed something odd, perhaps a plant, growing inside his lung, WHEC TV in Rochester, New York saidd.
The culprit, as it turns out, was likely a green pea that made its way down the wrong pipe, split and then began to grow, his doctors speculated.
Doctors removed the plant, which had grown to about an inch and a half and eventually caused his lung to collapse.
One of his first meals following surgery in the hospital included a side of peas.
“I laughed to myself and ate them,” he told WHDH TV.

Eeewww. I HATE spiders! When I was little, I was running outside past some trees. I didn't see the HUGE (I mean HUGE) spider dangling from its web. That horrible, horrible thing hit me smack in my face. I learned a new dance that day. LOL Since then I have been scared of spiders.
