My home town.
We lived in a small little town,We knew everyone in our town. There was one main highway through our town, with many dirt roads. We had two United Pentecostal churches just a few miles from each other. We had one store that consisted of a General store, Post Office, and cafe. We had many a fun times at that store. Uncle Teddy and Aunt Gracie owned the General store, and we always loved going in there for ice cold sodas. We also loved playing with our cousins too. On really hot days we'd walk over to the General store and get some ice cream, sit out back in the shade and eat to our little hearts content. There's nothing more fun than sitting in the shade, getting all sticky sweet, our faces covered in whatever candies we'd get into after we had ice cream. Sometimes if we was real lucky, we'd get to ride our old mule Nellie if Papa wasn't using her to haul wood that he had cut for the winter. We had so much fun riding Nellie and Willie. We' put an old hat on Nellie before we'd ride her, we also had a fedora on Willie too. They looked so cute in their hats. We got the name off Little House books when we were at Uncle Ted's store, Aunt Gracie would read to us which just was a big thing to us kids, we'd go over to the store to hear Aunt Gracie read from her books Nellie, and Willie, along with the rest of the characters was our favorite. When Papa got the two mules we named them Nellie and Willie. We had so much fun, lots of things to do. There was fishing, hunting, frogs to catch, trees to climbing, siblings to fight with ( there was fourteen of us), cousins to visit. We did not have dull moments, nor did we say we were bored to Mama. We didn't have idle time with nothing productive to do.We had chores to do, school work to do, and play time.Idle time was not our cup of tea, we found something to do. Seeing how cell phones was unheard of, nor did we have computers, still we found plenty to do. You did not want to tell Mama you were bored. To Mama 'bored' meant 'idle hands', 'idle hands' meant trouble. And with fourteen kids, getting into something was not good. So we did our chores, school work, house work, and played outside. We knew every creek that ran around our place. We had trotlines in every river bank, we'd hunt coons, gators, and little garter snakes. We've caught everything from skunks, to the family cat,( and a few nosiey dogs). Of coruse we had to get all our chores done, we couldn't give it a lick' n' a promise, as Mama would say. Us girls did the chores in the house, the boys did the chores outside. Mama saw to it that the boys could take care of a house just as good as us girls, and us girls could do just as good on the outside chores too. We cut our teeth on church pews, Mama saw too that. Mama and Papa was sure to be there for church. We might have filled a couple of pews but we went. Papa and the boys filled the pew ahead of us and we filled the pew behind them with Mama. Any movment from any of us during services caught their eyes. When the Preacher was preaching you had better pay attention. We had to give accounts on what we learned in church, and saying that Mary Sue was sitting next to Jimbob in sabbath school was not a good answer. We didn't get wondering eyes, or fidgety in sabbath school. if we did any fidgeting in church, that meant that we was bored. Mama did not like for us to be bored. So we made sure that we payed attention. If Mama or Papa had to take one of us kids out of church because we were misbehaving, we'd know it. It meant you were gonna get a switching.Mama and Papa didn't give to many warnings. One warning was enough, all they had to do was give a stern look at the offending party, once we got that look we knew , one more time and your in for it.
Sometimes we'd have potluck after services, which we liked. It meant time with our couisns and friends that we's only see once a week if we lived to far from each other. We'd get to hear all the latest gissop,( as long as Mama didn't catch us gissoping). Once Mama catch Nona Jean gissoping with Pearl Hickman about Mother Saddie's eldest girl, Bobby Sue. We thought Mama was gonna pull Nona's ear off, Mama sent Pearl to her Mama and sent Nona Jean back to the wagon until we got home. Nona had to look up Bilble verses on gissop, and write them ten times each.
Mama did not like gissoping at all. It was as bad as telling a lie, and Mama had a sure fire cure for lying. Nona Jean can still qoute those bible verse to this day. We made sure that we was a good deal away from everyone when we got to talking with our friends.
Now, we laugh at some of the things we told each other. Like the big bass that Billie hickman caught, which he said, ' was as big as a horse, and Pearl who said they had a chicken what could talk, a cat who could sing, and a pig that could fly. There was also the story of the tree with horns on it, Johnny and Billie Johnson told how ol' man Krafts touched it and turned into the devil! Now we didn't know what to make of that one, so we just told amongest ourselves that the Johnson boys hands down, told the best lies and could not be believed at all. Besides, we all knew that Ol' man, ..... um, er,....., Mister Kraft already had his horns and he didn't get them from no tree eaither. Sally Mae told me that one day last spring. And I knowd we can believe her cause she's the Parsons daughter, she can't tell a lie; besides lying is against her beliefs. ( Yeah, I know, I know, but we was kids. Kids believe what other kids tell them). We laugh about it now, how silly it was believing in all those stories. We'd just let our imagination run away with these things. Now, just think about us kids sitting around the table talking about those stories. There was times, I'm sure that Mama just wanted to laugh at our silliness. You know we growd up, telling these stories to our kids and grandkids. As kids we just enjoyed telling wild stories.
