My home town.

We lived in a small little town,We knew everyone in our town. There was one main highway through our town, with many dirt roads. We had two United Pentecostal churches just a few miles from each other. We had one store that consisted of a General store, Post Office, and cafe. We had many a fun times at that store. Uncle Teddy and Aunt Gracie owned the General store, and we always loved going in there for ice cold sodas. We also loved playing with our cousins too. On really hot days we'd walk over to the General store and get some ice cream, sit out back in the shade and eat to our little hearts content. There's nothing more fun than sitting in the shade, getting all sticky sweet, our faces covered in whatever candies we'd get into after we had ice cream. Sometimes if we was real lucky, we'd get to ride our old mule Nellie if Papa wasn't using her to haul wood that he had cut for the winter. We had so much fun riding Nellie and Willie. We' put an old hat on Nellie before we'd ride her, we also had a fedora on Willie too. They looked so cute in their hats. We got the name off Little House books when we were at Uncle Ted's store, Aunt Gracie would read to us which just was a big thing to us kids, we'd go over to the store to hear Aunt Gracie read from her books Nellie, and Willie, along with the rest of the characters was our favorite. When Papa got the two mules we named them Nellie and Willie. We had so much fun, lots of things to do. There was fishing, hunting, frogs to catch, trees to climbing, siblings to fight with ( there was fourteen of us), cousins to visit. We did not have dull moments, nor did we say we were bored to Mama. We didn't have idle time with nothing productive to do.We had chores to do, school work to do, and play time.Idle time was not our cup of tea, we found something to do. Seeing how cell phones was unheard of, nor did we have computers, still we found plenty to do. You did not want to tell Mama you were bored. To Mama 'bored' meant 'idle hands', 'idle hands' meant trouble. And with fourteen kids, getting into something was not good. So we did our chores, school work, house work, and played outside. We knew every creek that ran around our place. We had trotlines in every river bank, we'd hunt coons, gators, and little garter snakes. We've caught everything from skunks, to the family cat,( and a few nosiey dogs). Of coruse we had to get all our chores done, we couldn't give it a lick' n' a promise, as Mama would say. Us girls did the chores in the house, the boys did the chores outside. Mama saw to it that the boys could take care of a house just as good as us girls, and us girls could do just as good on the outside chores too. We cut our teeth on church pews, Mama saw too that. Mama and Papa was sure to be there for church. We might have filled a couple of pews but we went. Papa and the boys filled the pew ahead of us and we filled the pew behind them with Mama. Any movment from any of us during services caught their eyes. When the Preacher was preaching you had better pay attention. We had to give accounts on what we learned in church, and saying that Mary Sue was sitting next to Jimbob in sabbath school was not a good answer. We didn't get wondering eyes, or fidgety in sabbath school. if we did any fidgeting in church, that meant that we was bored. Mama did not like for us to be bored. So we made sure that we payed attention. If Mama or Papa had to take one of us kids out of church because we were misbehaving, we'd know it. It meant you were gonna get a switching.Mama and Papa didn't give to many warnings. One warning was enough, all they had to do was give a stern look at the offending party, once we got that look we knew , one more time and your in for it.
Sometimes we'd have potluck after services, which we liked. It meant time with our couisns and friends that we's only see once a week if we lived to far from each other. We'd get to hear all the latest gissop,( as long as Mama didn't catch us gissoping). Once Mama catch Nona Jean gissoping with Pearl Hickman about Mother Saddie's eldest girl, Bobby Sue. We thought Mama was gonna pull Nona's ear off, Mama sent Pearl to her Mama and sent Nona Jean back to the wagon until we got home. Nona had to look up Bilble verses on gissop, and write them ten times each.
Mama did not like gissoping at all. It was as bad as telling a lie, and Mama had a sure fire cure for lying. Nona Jean can still qoute those bible verse to this day. We made sure that we was a good deal away from everyone when we got to talking with our friends.
Now, we laugh at some of the things we told each other. Like the big bass that Billie hickman caught, which he said, ' was as big as a horse, and Pearl who said they had a chicken what could talk, a cat who could sing, and a pig that could fly. There was also the story of the tree with horns on it, Johnny and Billie Johnson told how ol' man Krafts touched it and turned into the devil! Now we didn't know what to make of that one, so we just told amongest ourselves that the Johnson boys hands down, told the best lies and could not be believed at all. Besides, we all knew that Ol' man, ..... um, er,....., Mister Kraft already had his horns and he didn't get them from no tree eaither. Sally Mae told me that one day last spring. And I knowd we can believe her cause she's the Parsons daughter, she can't tell a lie; besides lying is against her beliefs. ( Yeah, I know, I know, but we was kids. Kids believe what other kids tell them). We laugh about it now, how silly it was believing in all those stories. We'd just let our imagination run away with these things. Now, just think about us kids sitting around the table talking about those stories. There was times, I'm sure that Mama just wanted to laugh at our silliness. You know we growd up, telling these stories to our kids and grandkids. As kids we just enjoyed telling wild stories.

Actuly I 'borrowed' some siblings from some of my family member that had 15 kids. I kinda wrote it a 'little' on the fiction side, but the little town is actuly in Singer, La. and I remember the Churches there very well. I have more stories to add to this one. Most of it is things I have done, or heard my family talk about when they were kids. I think it is fun to tell good stories.

I enjoyed this, Sis. Rose. I was curious if it was non-fiction or fiction. I see from your above post, it's a little of both. I look forward to reading more. I could tell a few stories myself, except then y'all would know what a little troublemaker I could be when I was little. LOL

Sam Quntinn Johnson
2
" Sam Quntinn Johnson, I'm gonna beat you for spitin' on my new shoes," I shouted as I chased him throught the yard and almost into the dirt road, when Mama caught me" Girl, you better not even think about it, I'll wear you out with a stick. Get yourself back in this yard. Sam, you best get on home before I go calling on your Mama," Sam turning on his heel and making a run for his house, his only reply was," Yes Ma'ma". Muttering to myself about how I was gonna tortuer 'that boy' for spiting on my shoes. I came into the house and sat down.
Mama was waitin for me when I came in the house. "Ruth Ann, what am I gonna do with you?", She asked. " But Mama", I whined near to tears, " He spit on my shoes. Now, that was just mean. I'm gonna beat him when I see him for spitin on my shoes," I told Mama. "Now Ruth Ann, that's not christain. The Good Book says we are to love our enemies." By this time I was not having any of the 'forgive him' business, I was mad, fighting mad. And when I saw 'that boy' I was gonna do more than just ' forgive and forget', I was going to whop him a good one. Mama on the other hand had another ideal, and while I was still muttering ,( under my breath, mind you. Or so I thought.) I must've said something that didn't sit right with Mama, cause the next thing I knowed I was on the other side of the counter with my ear in her hands. And she was pulling! I was getting an ear full, and I could only catch parts of what she was saying. Her end of the conversation went like this,'When I tell you somethin' girl'...... and then she went to prayin! Oh, Lord, I was in for it now. she wasn't finshed, I was going to write out verses from the bible on forgiveness. And the next time I saw Sam I was going to be nice to him, or as Mama would put it, ' she was goin' to wear me thin'. By this time, thridteen heads had peeked around the corner to see what was going on, once they heard Mama prayin' and me in middle of the prayer, they left the house and went out to play. We knew when Mama starts praying, we'd done pushed her buttons. Mama did alot of prayin', all the time it seemed. She'd go down the line of us fourteen kids, calling us each by name. God was Mama's stress reliever. When Mama was done, I was ready and willing to 'forgive and forget'. But I was still gonna whop Sam Johnson when I saw him again for spitin' on my shoes, I was just gonna make sure that Mama didn't catch me. Of course every time I saw Sam, he made sure that my Mama was near by.

I wasn't bad when I was little, but I was trouble. I played outside in winter w/o shoes on, hit a cousin of mine with a broad( of course, she pushed me into the rose bushes.) No trouble at all.

That was a distant cousin that beat up a boy for spitin on her shoes at school. HaHaHa, they still talk about that. They sent her home for hitting him, but she had a good reason, 'He spit on my shoes'. They had a hard time convincing her that she couldn't leave school grounds, (they were sending her home) she on the other hand told them she was going to the store, which was across the only tracks in town, to get something to eat. She also told them her daddy said she could defend herself. Hehehe, They still sent her home, the boy on the other hand did not want to spit on her shoes at all. Like I said I use my families stories from their youth and just add to it. I change names, and things. I figure it's a nice way to tell a story with no cussing in it.

As time went by, I forgot about Sam. New things came along to get my attention. Papa was gonna take us all camping. ( yep, all fourteen of us, fishing, swimming, roaming throught the woods.) Mama was getting everything ready for our trip, ( it was actully camping on grandpa's fifty acres on land he had. We were so happy, all the cousins would be there, and we'd be there for church too. Grandpa always let our little church use the land for campmeeting during the summer and fall. Everyone from our church and friends from out of town was comming. My best friends Sally Mae, Mary Sue, Caroline Joy, and Bobby Faye where comming all the way from Churchpoint. They had went to visit family there and was on their way back. I was so excited. There would be new stories to tell each other during this time. I had it all planned out, we were was gonna stay up later talking about our new found joys. The older siblings was looking forward to visiting too, John David was looking forward to talking with Teddy Jr, Nona Jean was waiting to talk with Lorrianne about their new loves. Samuel James Ames was comming, along with other friends, The Leslies, Conners,Jones, Broussards, Trahans, Breauxs, and Doucets. Mama's family was comming too, the Richard family was going to be there. Uncle Bobby and Aunt June with their kids, Betty Ann, James Ray, and Annie. We were looking to having a great time. We could hardly wait, we were leaving early so is to help set up a cooking area. Of course with so many in our family we had to bring two wagons.

By the end of the week, into the next week; everybody would be there. There would be new joys, souls to welcome into the Kingdom and new adventures to see. It would also be there that a new calling would be placed on our family. That in itself would be an adventure for us.

Mother Saddie
3
Mother Saddie was Mama's best friend. They did alot togather. They went berry picking, they got togather to do their canning. There was a large peace of land between our house and theirs, Papa had set up plenty of clothes lines for both Mama and Mother Saddie to do their wash. Papa had bulit a wash shed just for them. We would go camping with them, and even take family trips togather. Mother Saddie's house was always open to us, and vise versa. All of us girls and Mother Saddie's girls, would go swimming, fishing, we even would take a walk across the road to Uncle Ted and Aunt Gracie's store. Just like our mothers, us girls were close. We had other friends too, but not many like this family. I guess you could say , we stuck togather. We were so close that people thought we all were sisters. We'd share our loves, hurts, tears, laughter. We told each other our dreams, we would cry togather when one hurt, we all hurt. We knew about all each others crushes ( we also knew about the older girls loves, that they always talked about). So we was not surprise when Nona Jean and Connie Sue started talking about their new beaus, what we did find out was that these ( so called)' beaus' was that they ( Nona Jean and Connie Sue) was meeting them in secret. Mama and Mother Saddie didn't even know this, and whoo boy, if they ever did find out! Well, we knew that if Mama ever found out,(Nona Jean knowing this as well, swore us to secrecy),what would happen. But it was Who their beaus were, the Sonnier family! They were mean, hateful, spiteful, and the way they spoke to others, mostly adults. There was nothing good they were into, even the two girls, Lorrie and Torrie. They had a mouth on them like we had not heard. They were allowed to speak using words that was not used by young ladies, ( or any ladies).Lorrie was the oldest by three years, Torrie wasn't as bad as her sister or brothers. But Lorrie, whoo boy, she was just plain mean; even her brothers made a wide berth with her. There was no store that she could not walk into anywhere who didn't know her, and what she would do. Her brothers, Henry and Jake, was two outlaws. They like to think of themselves as another James gang; and with Lorrie as their leader, they had been given that nick name. Their Mama and Papa encouraged all they did, making them into a real time gang. They was bad, stealing, fighting, running wild. Word had it that the James brothers were their great- great grandparents. They was so proud of that fact. The parents thought they could do no wrong. Of coruse it didn't help any at all that their Papa at the time was Mayor of our little town. Now Henry and Jake would come to church, ever so often, just to see if there was any girls there. Seeing Nona Jean and Connie Sue, they felt they had found the right ones, ( we felt they had found two knott heads). While we was watching these two knuckle heads, Torrie and Josiah had an interest with each other, and at times had talked with each other. It wasn't until after everything had died down with Nona and Henry, that we really found out about Josiah and Torrie. But Josiah was smarter than Nona Jean, he had told Torrie that for them to even have a relationship of any kind she was going to have to change. He bought her a bible, encouraged her, prayed with and for her. He knew how hard it was for her. On the other hand Nona and Connie was believing that they could change their to beaus. No matter how much they wanted to believe they would change, the two brothers never did.
One night while everyone was sleeping, Nona Jean and Henry met outside the house. They were sneaking off with Jake and Connie to be married. They had made their plans. When morning came it we heard four frantic mothers and dads.Mama and Papa went looking for them, while Mother Saddie and Ben went looking for Connie and Jake. Mean while they had made it to the next state to be married. Our days turned into weeks, Mama and Mother Saddie was worried sick. We went from town to town when we heard any word about the four. It wasn't until the next month that we heard that Lorrie had left with them. Now, we were really worried, the boys alone could get into petty things; but with Lorrie running the show; it would get worst quick.

Mother Saddie and Mama still worried about Nona, and Connie. With no word from them, there was nothing to do but pray and leave them in Gods hands. Days and weeks turned into months. They felt it was just out of their hands, and as always in a small town there was so much talk. People who had nothing better to do made sure they pointed their fingers at us, the things they said about us only made us mad and we wanted to 'strike' out to those who would dare hurt our family.

We moved on just waiting for the day when we'd hear from Nona Jean again. Our lives took on new meaning for us kids, school would be starting up again. Mother Sadie was getting ready for visits in town, seeing that she had family there. There was so much to do, and for us times where changing.Papa had saved money to buy a new car with. We where so happy, but we where not yet ready to retire our little horses. Shara Beth would be attending her first school day with us, she had her pail for lunch already to go long before school even started.

They are doing one of my children's books from the Adventures of Little David series soon to be in circulation, with the second one to follow in three months. They are true stories with a wee sprinkle of fiction.
They publish many styles of writings. I am planning on submitting inspirational work also.

Thanksgiving was a big deal for us. Mama turkey and dressing, pies, cakes, home made banana bread ( Yum). Our tables were so full, it was hard to just wait for everyone to get here. mother Saddie was coming with her family, we loved Mother Saddie's family. All our couisns' would be there. We just could not wait for suppertime. All those wonderful goodies looked so good. Do you how hard it is to wait for everyone? those naughty little hands can get in so much trouble for taking little snips of pies, or cakes, and Oh! my, Cookies! Ohhhhh, for us kids waiting was so long.
Of coruse we tried to wait, but the temptation was just too much. One little peice of pie, no one would know. But than Mama came along ( wouldn't you know it) just as we were descussing which pie we wanted to take a bite of, and with one look told us if we even touched that pie we would be in so much trouble! We decided to move along outside to wait. So, all bundled up in our coats, we went outside to play.

I experienced this. I was inquisitive if it was non-fiction or experiences. I see from your above publish, it's a little of both. I look ahead to examining more. I could tell a few experiences myself, except then y'all would know what a little troublemaker I could be when I was little.

I just love to write. I also love to give little 'twists' to somethings, but because I have a large family and don't want to hurt feelings I 'change ' things, that way no one gets hurt. But there are some things I share that I remember from my childhood, and things I've heard my grandparents talk about.
