I grew up Acadian aka...Cajun. Our traditions are very different from other cultures. Many people confuse being from Louisiana with being Cajun. There is a big difference. For instance if someone in our family dies, we keep the funeral home open 24 hours for around three days. We make gumbo and rice and cake and stay with the family. We are not quiet in the funeral home either. This is the time we like to talk and fellowship with each other. Many haven't seen one another for a few years, or since the last funeral. We don't feel its disrespectful as the person lying in the coffin was probably at the last wake and did the same. We also do things like wear black or white and don't listen to the radio or watch tv or participate in enjoyable things sometimes for a whole year when a close family member like husband/wife/mom/dad/son/daughter die. Do you have any cultural traditions that you would like to share?

I grew up in the Country. My family lived in Louisiana just one mile from the Pearl River Swamp. When the river flooded it reached our front yard. My family from Mississippi called me a " Coonie " but actually I was only about 10 miles from the Mississippi line.
We are Family oriented and enjoy family reunions, spending time with family. We were raised to be true to our word, honest in our dealings, and for us girls to keep our virtue until marriage, because once you lose your reputation, there is no regaining it. This is still the way I believe we should live today. I wasn't raised Apostolic, but I was taught good morals, didn't curse, sware or take the Lord's Name in Vain. I have lived in Large cities, but still prefer country life to city life. God and my family mean everything to me.

well, most on here know one of our cultural/family traditions, which is every spring means hickory chicken hunting time LOL! Where I come from, the men hunt and fish and the women know how to cook! Well, actually the women do too LOL! Summertime means no more socks to wash/fold (you're lucky to even find us in flipflops even) and nighttime means crickets chirping, frogs croaking and lightening bugs flashing, windows wide open with box fans whirling! IF you sleep indoors at all, you would often catch us on the porch or in a hammock to escape the summer heat.
We make our own jam and lye soap and milk our own goats and gather our own eggs. There is always something hatching or incubating and a baby's birth is celebrated and named instantly! We dry our own apples and freeze anything and everything to use later. We forage the hills for berries and mushrooms or any herb God gave for us to use. We know the value of gensing and yellowroot and know it is spring by the fiddlehead and mayapples. Our men really do have red necks from working out in the summer heat all day long and a farmers' tan to boot! We teach our daughters to sew and all the essentials and our sons how to be providers. Our sons are often working in a neighbors farm or finding some way to make money to help out. We spend whole weeks out of the year gathering blackberries to sell/freeze and make jam and wouldn't have it any other way! In the fall we would always bring a big wagon up and lay sheets on it and dry bushels of apples on them to freeze for use in apple pies and other recipes the next year. As a child I remember it took all day to get them apples ready for drying, but it was so fun, all the children would have their own job! In our spare time we sit on our porches and pick our guitars or banjos, and you can see someone else doing the same thing every night if you drive around looking. Some around here never take their christmas lights down, istead they become porch jam session lights to sing by! LOL!
We grow our own sorghum and make our own molassis. Even a 2 yr old likes to play in the fields during harvest! We aren't afraid of work and love play even better! We believe in modesty and chastity and think that some things are meant for you and God alone. Whenever we gather together we ring a bell to gather and blow a shofar to welcome anyone else! We keep Kosher and most Jewish holy days. We think otta and ain't is a word and know that holler can mean more than one thing around here! Where I come from, when you go swimming, you're just heading down the hill to the creek or if you are like some I know, heading to the watering trough LOL! Jesus is always FIRST, our home is always OPEN and our children are the most beautiful creations this side of heaven.
