For all those involved in tape ministries and such, I was wondering. Do you have to have some sort of special equipment to copy a cassette to PC and it still be in stereo? The Stuff that I bought at radio shack a while back seems to only produce mono mp3s which is quite....blahish.
I am trying to copy cassettes to cd so that the messages can be replayed thousands of times without loosing integrety, which you should know a cassette's life span can be very short if it is a popular tape. An additional note, I dont have much money to go out and purchase fancy and expensive equipment.

Any HELPFUL input will be appreciated. :)

Well my husband (the self-taught genius) has his own way of doing almost anything like this., in a "cheap"er way; we don't have much $$ either.
I know that he's hooked up a cassette player [nothing special]to the computer...uploads the music into a file..then burns it to cd!
BUT I myself could not do it., alone. As a matter of fact, I have some of my former church's 'taped' sermons that he copied to a cd...that came out really well! It sure does last longer., and I was able to insert a nicer, bigger "label" on it, too...looked more professional! :D
Thats one option., I'm sure others have much better ways to do it in even higher quality!

Most sound cards have a stereo line input, you need a cable that is RCA (tape deck) on one end and stereo head phone jack on the other.

Then, you need software capable of capturing it in stereo. The windows recorder that comes with windows Does Not.

My recommendation: Bite the bullet and shell out $70 for sound forge studio http://mediasoftware.sonypictures.com/Products/ShowProduct.asp?PID=718

Audio editing software just does not get any better than this. We use the more advanced version here to do all our capturing and re-mastering. But this light version is everything you need. It supports all major audio and video formats.

Oh yeah! Just remembered-we have something called ULead Studio for capturing video and audio., sound card with the stereo line input., etc., we used it for the video ministry at our other church. We haven't used it since.
I'm sure the Sony stuff is much better, I checked out that link!

I'm an Open Source man myself, I have a cable that connects to my stereo to the aux line of the sound card, but so far all I get is mono, I will check out that link though Bro John. Thanks!

Oh yeah the thing I use currently is called dbPowerAMP AUX input, I use alot of the dbpoweramp stuff, I wonder if there is a better version of this software available now....hmmmmmmm.

Added in:
The program I use is ok its just that the means that I tranfer the audio to pc is prolly wrong, its coming in mono, no matter what.

You are correct, the first cord is a mono cord. Here is an audio app that is OS and cross-platfom compatible: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

It isn't soundforge but it ain't bad either, and it does export to MP3.
