The rich young ruler came to Jesus and asked how he might obtain eternal life.
Jesus said, to follow the commandments.
The rich young ruler responded, that he had followed all the commandments since birth, and Jesus said, "thou lackest one thing, sell all that you have and give to the poor and follow me..."
The man went away, because he had a lot of possessions, and those possessions meant more to him than following Jesus.
One thing that has always got my attention in the story of the Garden, is that the woman had all that was in the garden, all. Yet, she saw that tree, tree of the knowledge of good and evil, as being the one thing that she lacked.
To see ourselves as lacking anything in God and wanting more than what He has given us is to believe that God has intentionally withheld good from us. There are things that He withholds from us, but for our good, or for the good of others.
He gives us everything good thing, and every perfect thing in the Holy Ghost. We are never empty in Him, never incomplete, never barren, within the presence of God.
The woman had everything, yet she longed for one thing, and fell.
The rich young ruler had everything, yet he wanted eternal life. When Jesus showed him what he would need to obtain it, he turned away from it.
Job lost all. But he had the one thing that he needed to hold on. His integrity. Somewhere within Job was the knowledge that God was good and God was not to be blamed.
The one thing we should never lack, is the knowledge that God is able to supply all that we need. If we hold on to the things of this world, we lose. But if we reach out to God, and allow Him to supply, we come away rich and full, and blessed.
