The prodigal son took his inheritance and went out into the world, and wasted the inheritance that God gave him on worldly things. He ended up in a mudpit.
It dawned on him that a servant in his father's house was in better condition than he.
Let's think about this.
A servant in the house partakes of the same food as the master. The son outside the house did not.
A servant in the house is with the master every day, listening to him as he guides the affairs of the house. He unlike the son outside the house, benefits from the leadership of the master of the house.
A servant in the house will be with the master always. The son outside the house is not.
Taking this a little farther, let us take a look at Eliezer of Damascus.
Eliezer was at first the heir of Abraham. But Abraham needed a son of the bloodline to carry on the name. Eliezer, however, was a part of the promise. He went and brought home the bride.
Eliezer remained with Abraham. Ishmael did not.
Eliezer continued with Father Abraham. Ishmael did not.
Eliezer partook of the blessings of the house. Ishmael did not.
Eliezer took part in the table of the Father's house, while Ishmael did not.
Sometimes, it is better to be a servant in the house of the Lord, than a son who takes no part in the life of the Father.
