I love to read too. I have three books going at the moment. One I picked up from our White Elephant stall when I sorted out everything, and it is called 'The five love Languages" It was recommended to me by the lady who started this thread:)
I haven't really got 'into' it yet. Another one is called Boundaries, recommended by people here and others from church who have read it and found it really good. And another one called Shatter your Strongholds by Liberty Savard. Interesting book, takes a look at prayer from a different angle.
The best book I read is a daily pleasure and I am sure you all can agree with me on that one!!:)

THE BIBLE!! :D

Of course..first and foremost.
I sure wish I had some of those books you all have mentioned.
Although I really have precious little time to read much else.

Okay, confession time - when I get a chance, I'm still reading the fictional "Left Behind" series..I'm on book 9, I think...its taking me forever, and also "Chicken Soup for the Soul" sometimes..
these books were lent to me, and I know I should really hurry up, read, and return.
I really don't have any spare $$ for buying books, certainly not at full price.

Currently I'm reading "Christmas in my heart" by Joe Wheeler #8
You can find them at "focus on the family" ministries. I believe he has put out #12 this year. Really touching stories! I have #1-3 also and usually pull them out around Christmastime for obvious reasons!
One year in the church we were pastoring, we had a ladies Christmas get-together and I read a story, from one of these books, as we sat around the fireplace..wow, not a dry eye and was a wonderful and "different" Christmas celebration. I'm searching for a story to do in our ladies banquet for this year, We are going to set-up a wing back chair and small endtable with a lamp on the platform (give it real homey feel )spotlight it and read the story. :)

I stumbled upon a womans place website a few years ago and its really a nice site. I have read a couple of Lynda Allison Doty's books also. Pretty good! She has a ministry in emotional healing and she really shows you the power in the word for inner healing!

Hope everyone had a blessed Thanksgiving!

Thanks for the great post.I want to read some of those stories. Is the story free on Focus on the Families website? lv sis.c

Sometimes Dr. Dobson has used Joe Wheelers stories for his December monthly newsletter he sends out, I'm not sure this year if he did or not. I have only recieved my focus on the family magazine so far. Christmas in my heart is the title of 12 books put out by Joe Wheeler. He gets stories sent to him from all over the world written by people like you and me. Some are true experiences, some are fictional, some are old stories that have been aroud foreever, but ALL are touching. He wont print them if he doesnt shed a tear or two when hes proofing them.

I know they can be ordered through Focus on the Family and this year they are pushing #12. Im thinking you could also go to your local library and see if the other eleven are availble.
They are great gifts also! My husband even loves for us to sit and cuddle and I read him a story! (How romantic!);)

Check them out sissy you will love em!

I LOVE to read! I just don't get very long at a time to do it. Usually at bed time and then I'm so sleepy sometimes I don't get much reading done.

I do the daily Bible reading B.R.E.A.D.

I am usually reading 2 or 3 books at a time. Currently I'm reading 'Praying God's Will for Your Life" & "The Power of a Praying Woman" both by Stormie OMartian. Also "Battlefield of the Mind" by Joyce Meyer. I just finished "Victor Not a Victom" by Joy Haney. They are all excellent.

I also love to listen to preaching tapes, especially by Sister Nona Freeman, I think I have a couple dozen by her! I have also read all her books.

God Bless

the B.R.E.A.D. is Bible Reading Enriches Any Day. Its the charts you get for daily bible reading to read the Bible thru in one year. From Jan - Dec marking each day off. Published by the Sunday School division. you get a certificate at the end of the year. this will be my 3rd year.

Hi there, we have something similar over here. Probly from the same place. :)

Pity we live in different countries, though this internet is FANTASTIC for getting to know people. Do have MSN chat? I do with my family, expecially my Mum who lives in N>Z. That is mostly who I talk to over that. I reckon some of us ladies could get one of those lines going and we would have a great time of fellowship.:) We would have to limit our time too. HaHa

Also good are:

Joyce Meyer

Emilie Barnes - I love her books. :)

Cynthia Heald has done some excellent Bible Studies including "Becoming a Woman of Excellence". Very very good.

Barbara Johnson - down to earth and very very funny with dramatic real life stories and experiences from which she shares a wealth of wisdom.

Lisa Bevere - I really liked "Out of Control and Loving It"

There are more. :)

I finally got my book yesterday from PPH. It is called "So Long the Night" by LaJoyce Martin. I have only read like one and a half pages so far. Has anyone else read any of her books? Let me know what you think if you have.

I also enjoy reading books by Janette Oke and Beverly Lewis. They are always centered around someone coming to know God. No, their "doctorine" if you wanna call it that, isn't right, but they still write good books. I am very interested in the Amish people, so I love reading Beverly Lewis books. She has a new one now that I am dying to read, but don't have the money to buy it. Hopefully, I will be able to get it soon.

Hi Sister Renee,
I love Beverly Lewis books.I too almost bought the one at walmart.I am going to wait until I can get to the library. They get the books even when they are new out.Check yours. In fact ask the librarian if you can get it.Sometimes one of the other librairies has it and they will get it for you in a day or two.
I love Sis.Lajoyce Martin. In fact I was sitting here trying to remember her name when you typed this. That was the Holy Ghost. She is funnier than Barbara Johnson.I met her and heard her in person at the UPC Florida Ladies Conference one year. They have such good meetings and are not too large so you can acutually meet the speakers after. My pastors wife was one of the officials and I helped with stuff.I love her book entitled,"How to Love A Bent Winged Angel" Especially since I care for handicapped children I think its closest to my heart than all her others.lv sis.c

ddc, Our library carries Beverly Lewis' books too. I just haven't gotten over there yet. I have checked out a lot of hers because they are SOOOOOO very expensive at the Bible bookstores. I used to be able to find Janette Oke books at Walmart, but that was in Alabama. You can't find hers or Beverly Lewis' at Walmart out here. It is like people out here don't like good Christian fiction. You can't find gospel groups that come sing either. It is so frustrating. I am going to have to see what I can do about getting to the library. I think I better read Sis. Martin's book first or JW will shoot me. LOL

hi ladies! i'm new to the cafe. i'm a rookie, bear with me. i think this is my first post? i hope i'm in the right place! well, i'm on my third charle's dicken's novel: oliver twist. dicken's reputation as an excellent author is well deserved. his story telling is second to none, and best of all he wrote with a conscience. he was especially concerned about the plight of poverty stricken children in the society of his day. he also wrote to promote awareness of the brutality, in his opinion (i'm no history expert yet!), of the french revolution. the big words and old english grammar take a while to get used to, but it isn't far into the reading that you do and hardly notice them at all. even if you couldn't stand the grammar you'd have a hard time putting the book down; the stories are just too engaging! i've also read the majority (relevant to me)of "a charlotte mason companion" by karen andreola. it's a homeschooling reference that inspires tenderness in the bosom of the teaching mom. it also promotes something called mother culture: simply the nurturing of the mother through time to herself not being idle, but pursuing her own education and familiarity with the God-made wonders of this life (eg. nature study, art, great literature, classical music) - being truly cultured- so that she has something rich to give her children and not just a dry education from text books. she has experience. I like it! consistent prayer, and the daily study of the scriptures is assumed to be the foundation for it all. i recommend it for any homeschooling mom.

Good morning every one. (well it is here anyway) :)
I have just finished the book called 'The Intersessors' by Dnzil Holman. A very good book and anyone who thinks intersessory prayer could be something you would like to do or feel that is what the Lord has called you to do, this is a book to read.

I also finished another book last night too. It is called 'The Power of a Praying Woman'. What a good book!!! It is by Stormie OMartian. I have read her other book about the Praying Wife but am going to read it again, and refresh my memory.
Tell me:) When you see so many areas that need work in our lives, where do you start? I know the work is never done, but sometimes when you read these books you are very humbled. (Hence the reason I read them all the time) And even discouraged. I am sure that is NOT what the Author is trying to do but it happens. I love reading and I REFUSE to stop as I need to go forward in my walk with the Lord, and when you stop reading the books that's when you start just treading water.

OOOps :nt:

Now I have started reading the book called 'Five Love Languages of the Teenager'. By Gary Chapman. I am looking forward to what the Lord is going to do through this book for me and my two older daughters.

Has any one read those books on Prayer by Liberty Savard, Shattering your Strongholds and Breaking the Power, I can't remember the last one.

Welcome Sheepish and greetings of peace to you in the name of Jesus.

I really liked your suggestions as well as the way you expressed them.

While I am particularly fond of non-fiction and find a lot of the "Christian" romance novel reading that is popular with so many suspect, your Charles Dickens recommendation peaked my curiousity. Perhaps I will find a bit of something not entirely practical that I can enjoy as well as benefit from. Your comments suggest that Dickens' writing itself provides a practical side.

And then "A Charlotte Mason Companion" by Karen Andreola. And how you worded it, "it's a homeschooling reference that inspires tenderness in the bosom of the teaching mom. it also promotes something called mother culture:" It sounds like exactly what I need and have been praying for and an excellent lead.

So you're keeping your children at home? Us too! I am thankful that my dear husband was the one who had the most confidence in the beginning. There was no question for him about keeping the children home.

Your sentiments for classical education are something I share and have been praying for more direction on. I think He just answered my prayer through you.

We have a library within walking distance from our home for which I thank the LORD. The next nice morning, I just may take the children and venture over to check out Charles Dickens and see what Charlotte Mason books are available, particulary, "A Charlotte Mason Companion" by Karen Andreola.

Thank you Sheepish.
