We are upgrading the Apostolic.Net ministry server to a Dual-Xeon server later this week. The projected downtime will be about 20 minutes.

The new system will quadruple the resources available for our ministry us and will hopefully solve some of the issues we are experiencing.

System Specs for those who care:

Dual 2.4 GHz Intel Xeon 533/MHz Front Side Bus
2 GB Dual Channel DDR
2 X 120GB SATA Hard Drives 8 MB Buffer
1400 GB Monthly Bandwidth allotment
24/7 Monitoring of essential services
THe end result is that things will be faster. GNC will be quicker. Audio/video streaming will buffer faster. etc etc.

additioanlly we have room for growth now, where before we were pretty well capped.

How much do servers like that run? I have never delt with servers before, except trouble shooting video problems, so pricing is an interesting topic to me :) just incase the future holds something in that area for me :)

Sorry, that falls into the category of "trade secret". you can find them out there any where between $250 a month to $1000.00 a month. Always remembering that "you get what you pay for" At 250 a mo count on lousy bandwitdh and abysmal support.

Also you need to factor in your unix experience level. If you don't know your way around the shell and apache/POP/SMTP configuration you are best to go with a managed solution such as virtual hosting or virtual host reselling. I spend probably and hour a day purely on server management tasks.

The upgrade will occur tonight around 10:30 PM Mountain.

I am assured that the downtime will only be a few minutes.

Now, why don't I have a "yeah right" smiley :?:

Apostolic.Net rockin' the Casbah.....
"Hmmmm...is it a sin to use 2 Xeon's instead of 1 mere pIV....hmmmm"

Bro. Atkinson,
Of course we care, we just don't understand! But we do understand the end-result. Thanks for all your efforts with this great forum.

Have I been away so long as to not notice this, how embarrasing!!!! :o

Bro. Atkinson, I hope you moved to a Windows environment!!! Linux, like I said before isn't even in the Bible, where "Windows" is mentioned at least 28 times!

Let me know how you like the new server. We have 3 servers here, all 3 with Dual Xeon processors, YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!!!

Your 2 GB Dual Channel DDR with provide the throughput, BUT I noticed you only have 1400 GB monthly, I think you need to bump that up, especially with some of the topics discussed here on GNC!!!!

From one Geek to another, "Keep up the Good Work, Bro. Atkinson!!!"

1400 not enough? that is 3.5 T1 lines at full capacity! :D

Right now we are utilizing about 200 GB/mo. Yes we are real happy with the dual xeons. It has been a week since the upgrade and all is well.

No, for most all the stuff I do Linux is the thing. We do have 2 Win2k3 web servers.

One for us, we do all our streaming video using windows media services. And one for windows 2003 hosting.

Nope 1400 GB is not enough, I think you need an OC48 and that's just for GNC alone!!!

Actually bandwidth usage for the GNC is avg ~5 GB per month. Most of which is actually peoples avatars and photo attachments.

I could cut that substantially by:

Increasing the GZIP output factor (would result in slower page loads)
Deleting the capacity of the users to have avatars (some forums do) or limiting the avatar size to 50x50 pixels.
Disabling photo attachements.
Simplifying the theme to be text based.
However, at 5.0 GB/month, that is well within what I consider to be acceptable resource usage.

*IF* it got to the point where they GNC was using in excess of 100 GB a month then I would have other problems than bandwidth resources. Then it would be usin extensive processor resources. However, that would also mean that we would have 20,000 members and half of them very active.

I don't see that as a problem anytime soon. If and when we get there we will move iether to a dual-xeon type server for the GNC all by itself, or possibly load balancing between two servers.

The highest traffic site in terms of bandwidth usage is the preaching site at around 100 GB/mo

The highest traffic web site in terms of unique visitors is Apostolic.Net at 26,336 (February - Upwards Trend)

The highest traffic site in terms of hits, is of course, the GNC at 1,534,978 for February.
