When Exhaustion Takes over
Here are a few points I have on this Give us your thoughts on how you deal with exhaustion for sometimes the work of the Lord can cause us to be drained and if you have any form of chronic illness then it can be worst but that does not mean that we cannot be fruitful for the Lord. Glory!

One of the hardest things in which to adjust when one is diagnosed with a chronic illness is the fatigue that accompanies it. It is an exhaustion that I had never experienced until I was diagnosed with a chronic illness a few years ago. I was relieved to be diagnosed, believing that having a name for my fatigue and pain would validate those days when I moved a little slower at work I am retired now but still busy doing the Lord's work Amen!. I hoped that people would stop saying, "Smile!" or "You sure look tired today." If I tried to explain that my illness tended to make me tired, they would respond, "Oh, I'm tired too. I had a late night." Is there any way to explain that my tiredness is different than their tiredness?

The word exhaust is from the Latin root word, which means "to draw out." We may often experience that feeling of being "used up" or "having nothing left." It's scary when you realize that you may likely never have the kind of energy you once did.

Remember, just because we may be tired does not mean that we are weak or ineffective in our ministry for God. He can work through us even when we are exhausted. So, what do we do when we just can't do it all?

(1) We can accept the help of others. When we are used to doing it all for ourselves and others too, it's difficult to ask for help or to accept it when it's offered. We need to let go of finding our value in what we can accomplish for ourselves (like how big a dinner party we can throw and how much of the house we can clean). Instead, we need to consider what God wants us to accomplish.

When the Israelite army was attacked by the Amalekites, (Exodus 17: 8-15) Moses said he would stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in his hands. As long as Moses held his hands up to God, the Israelites were winning, but when he let them fall, the Amalekites began to win. So was Moses able to pull through the long hours holding up his hands? Not without the help of Aaron and Hur.

"When Moses' hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up-one on one side, one on the other-so that his hands remained steady till sunup" (v. 12). God's power was flowing through the fingertips of Moses, and yet God still allowed Moses' arms to become tired. Was that so Moses had to accept help? What would have happened if Moses had said, "Don't worry about it, guys. I can handle it. Go on down the hill and I'll come later when I finish this battle." God was able to work through Moses when Moses accepted the help of others.

(2) Know that true strength comes only from God. "He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall, but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." (Isaiah 40: 29-31).

As I was talking with a friend the other day, she remarked how, before her illness, she was an extremely busy person, on the go wanting to do it all and more. God has slowed her down. She has been forced to change her lifestyle, and yet she has grown closer to God because of it. When God gives strength to the weary, he doesn't promise where we will feel that strength. It may be in our relationship with him or others and not in our body. Only He knows what is perfect and what we truly need.

(3) We can realize that God is able to work in our lives despite our exhaustion. One of the most often-told bible stories is of Jesus talking with the Samaritan woman at the well. She became a believer and left to follow Jesus. Her testimony to others brought many people to God. How did Jesus meet this woman? "Jesus was tired from his journey and sat down by the well." (v. 6).

Even Jesus became tired. He wanted to sit down to rest and have some water, and God used His son's fatigue to bring many people to know Him. God can use us under any circumstances if we will allow him the opportunity. It may not be in the way we would like. We probably won't have a bungy jumping ministry, but God will work out His plan for our lives in His timing. It's just so hard to wait and see what that plan is!

(4) We need to take comfort in the fact that God never tires. Thank goodness we have such a wonderful God, and that He will never grow weary. You may remember as a child, your father coming home from a long day at work. He would walk in the door looking tired, but as soon as you ran through the house, yelling, "Daddy's home! Daddy's home!" his weary eyes would begin to sparkle, and soon he had plenty of energy to play until you went to bed. We all have those days where we want to put the covers over our head and not get up. Some of us have days where we would like to get up, but our broken bodies won't allow it. We must stay put.

During these times, it's especially comforting to know that our God will never be bedridden; He will never put the covers over His head and say, "I can't deal with my children today." "The Lord God is the everlasting God, the creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary." (Isaiah 40: 28). When I am truly tired, my eyes crave darkness and stillness; my body longs for the warm comforts of my grandmother's quilt.

Perhaps the hardest thing to accept is that even if these longings are fulfilled, I will still awake wishing for more sleep, never feeling refilled. Spiritually, however, I can be filled by going to God and asking for His comfort, His strength, and the renewal of my spirit. When I go to the Father and am filled with his peace, I can find rest that no amount of sleep will ever replace. "I will lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety." (Psalm 4:8).

Give us your thoughts on how you deal with exhaustion

God bless

EXHAUSTION: I quit one of my 3 jobs, after much deliberation and counsel with GOD! Above all, and always first, more prayer and medition time! Higher focus on diet/exercise regimen for health ailments. Proper rest is also recommended. Knowing when to stop, take a break, or delegate tasks.
A soul consecrated to GOD, has more staying power., and another very important technique is the time and attention spent working with lost souls!
That is always cause for joyfullness!
Our lives must balance out the stress of this physical life with spiritual exercises!
As part of our yearly "ladies camp" we always start the early mornings with spiritual exercises, its fun., we march around the campsite, singing songs of praise, we have our own llittle "garden of gethsemane" prayer area [(very beautiful and serene, by the lake), at one of our usual camp locations.], etc., we should really all have a place like this at home, a version of the prayer closet.

I think about the songs of Zion and begin to encourage myself in the Lord and pray for strength in my body. Somehow, God always manages to keep me going.

Hi Third Generation YES they are my words but when I use any other articles I do put where they come from and that I have permission to use them As to writing a book wow! I don't think I have the know how to do that and the thought of it would tire me I think [smile{ I am in the process now of writing a series of Bible studies on the entire book of Nehemiah and have now started a series on the book of Acts I love teaching the word of God and then making application of it to our daily lives I do post these studies on my website . I have had to change some of what I had been taught when I came into the truth ofJ ESUS NAME but that is very exciting as the Holy Ghost gives me revelation I guess you call it of the word of God and what it means It is like a light bulb has come on in my head and heart I love it. I love to write but only to bring glory and prasie to Jesus as there was a time in my life when I could not remember things and God healed me and gave me back my memory The memory lost was due to drug addiction over the yrs I praise the Lord that now he has restored to me my memory and that is a true miracle that has happened in my life I use to bug the doctors with the question 'WILL I GET MY MEMORY BACK' and they did not know wow! Jesus did it Thank you for your kind remarks.

OH if you would like to read my studies on the book of NEHEMIAH go to my website at http://our.homewithgod.com/phyllis/ I am posting them there The acts studies I have just started and will be posting as soon as we are able to get it done. Feel free to use anything that I write if you like You have my permission if it will bring glory to the Lord

"And after him was Eleazar the son of Dodo the Ahohite, one of the three mighty men with David, when they defied the Philistines that were there gathered together to battle, and the men of Israel were gone away: 10He arose, and smote the Philistines until his hand was weary, and his hand clave unto the sword: and the LORD wrought a great victory that day; and the people returned after him only to spoil. " (2 Samuel 23:9-10)

The way I deal with exhaustion is to find a quiet spot to myself, and listen to music. I believe this is the way to do it. Just you and the Lord.

Sister Phyllis,
I bought a new mattress cover for my bed that is 100% Egyptian cotton it is like sleeping on a cloud. Some of the reasons people are so exhausted is not sleeping comfortably.I also bought one of those satin things to go over my eyes.I also have a ceiling fan that I put on low.I invested in good pillows.I recently was able to purchase a Lampberger which is a neat thing that dispenses relaxing aromas into the air.I like peppermint. There are some on the market that are less expensive but my dad blessed me with money for the real kind.I also draw the hottest bath I can stand and put in it 1 cup of epson salt, 2 tablespoons of olive oil,
10 drops of peppermint oil.I completely submerge in this while drinking herbal tea.The recommended stay is one hour.If you really need rest do this on an afternoon.Preferably a Saturday. The reason I say Saturday is that to people nowadays Saturdays are the busiest.Try doing something for yourself next saturday. The bath soak is inexpensive. The sleep items are worth it for the difference in your physical self.Just today someone gave me a gift of a new enviroscape fountain.I am going to add that to my personal space on my bedside table.I also take the time to read a really fun book like something by Barbara Johnson.
Sometimes exhaustion can be spiritual but most of the time if our physical body is rested and cared for the spiritual thing cannot take such a toll on us.lv sis.c

Hi Sis Phyllis,
I just wanted to thank you for what you wrote above. How many times have I asked myself, "Is there any way to explain that my tiredness is different than their tiredness?" Just knowing someone else understands how I feel is a great encouragement to me. I do get frustrated sometimes because I can't do all the things I used to do, especially in the service of the Lord, but you are right, the Lord has given me new areas of service that don't take the physical strength that I no longer have. I was particularly blessed by your use of the example of Moses, Aaron, and Hur. I have always been one to be in the position of Aaron and Hur. That was my ministry. (It still is, but now I go about it in a different way) I never considered it from the other angle. I do find it difficult to accept help and I need to work on that. I don't really have any advice to give, except just to back to the well every day. Jesus is our strength and he is our rest. Thank you again for what you wrote.

Thank you sister Cooper and all of you for your kind remarks and and xerf no worry I am a pretty easy person to get along with and I dont let things offend me at all okay Thank you sis cooper for the ideas I will try some of them I think they would help me deal with the stress factors I have to in my home which in turn are not helping my physical You know though Jesus is my all sufficiency and I lean on Him from day to day and each day He helps me deal with all I have to and gives me a peace in the midst of the tirals You are all precious sisters and brothers to me and I love you all in the name of Jesus . I find God just opens other avenues to serve Him in and no matter what any of us have wrong with us Jesus can still use us He is me and I praise Him for this I am actually excited about all that God is doing in my life even at my age wow! Another key I feel is to be positive in life and have a good attitude no matter what and the Lord will blest that Thank you Jesus . Praise is a great way to overcome any thing and when you start praising the Lord it is as if everything else just falls in to place so neatly
God bless
