That we may apply our heart unto wisdom" (Psalm 90:12).

SCENARIO:
You are visiting a nearby lake in search of solitude, when you short-lived reverie is disrupted by a strange commotion. Cries for help draw your attention to a thrashing in the middle of the lake- someone is drowning. You remember-- you can't swim. Adrenalin puts the body into "fight or flight". Thoughts whirl. You must act quickly. Then you recall several life jackets hanging on the boat dock. You quickly pull one from its hook and toss it into the water, where it lands well within the man's reach.
"Grab this" you cry, It'll keep you afloat while I pull you in." "Help!" she cries again, still thrashing wildly.
She goes under- the second time- then resurfaces. You throw the second life preserver. It lands to her immediate right. To your dismay, the woman seems oblivious to the only device that seperates her from disaster. She goes down- for the third time. The air takes on an eery silence. The waves lap less untill only ripples mark the spot of the tragedy that just took place. Ripple made by life preservers that would have saved the woman-if only she had taken hold.
Wisdom is like that. We can, each of us in turn, drown of ignorance in sea of wisdom, by failing to grasp it. With wisdom come: promotions and honor, an ornament of grace and a crown of glory, and long life (Proverbs 4:8-11). Still, many lack of wisdom, perhaps becauseof the work involved.
First,we must desire wisdom. " Wherefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to get wisdom, seeing he hath no heart to it?" (Proverbs 17:16).
Second, we must ask for wisdom. "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God.... it shall be given him" (James1:5).
Finally, daily Scripture Study is a must. "For the Lord giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding" (Proverbs2:6)
Proverbs is a book of wisdom. It is a good practice to study and read the bible.Wisdom makes life's seas calmer. Even in the times of rough waters, when we fear going down the third time, the right verse will surface as a lifeline that keeps us afloat all the time.

"He that getteth wisdom loveth his own soul: he that keepeth understanding shall find good" (Proverbs19:8).

Yeah I have a book or two that deals specifically with Proverbs...my son especially likes one of them.
Proverbs is most excellent. Totally cool!

In that example above, first you spoke that it was 'within the mans reach" then it spoke of it being a woman that was drowning.
Was that an error, or was there meant to be more by that?
Sorry, it was just a bit confusing.

Yes, it was a typo, it meant woman's .
So sorry about that. (thanks for bringing it up.)

But somehow we got the point, didn't we?

Some people are not really interested in saving the lost.
They are only interested in their own agendas.
And where they could have helped people, they
only yelled, screamed, condemned.

Then again, there is also the bully on the block
who would hold someone's head under water
til they give them their lunch money, because
they are bigger and have more might, and
can get away with it.

Witness, somehow I don't understand what kind of wisdom are you implying here.Is there any other?
My opinion, if that person who you think is the bully needs lunch money, give 'em. It's not how big or mighty they are. It's just your fear because ,the person you think is the bully, is bigger and mightier than you. Having your own agenda,
it is an individual thinking...as well as interests in saving the lost..
Again, wisdom is from God. Godly people have godly thinking.......let's all get hold of wisdom......

Sis. Pam,

This thread has to do with people "saving themselves" by taking hold of wisdom. It has to do with choosing wisdom rather than drowning in ignorance. It is an allegory.

Amen, Amen, Amen.....
Yes, that is the whole point...we can not be at the pity party...

I did understand.
And we do have the ultimate responsibility for our souls.
But Jesus had compassion on the sheep without a shepherd.

The bottom line isn't our excellent words or how well we
know the scripture or our knowledge of the Greek and Hebrew.
The bottom line is making a difference in the lives of the lost.
Pulling them out of the fire.

Maybe it involves more than just throwing a lifeline. Maybe
it involves going that extra mile and putting on the lifejacket
and jumping in the water ourselves. Laying down our lives.
Jesus chose not to be delivered from the Cross, but gave
His blood for us, yet being sinners.
