There are 56 works written between 33 and 100AD at the site above.

Although not the inspired word of God, it gives us a glimpse of how early followers of Jesus understood the gospel.

We read many books today on faith, but reading the works by the most early believers can be quiet fun to read. Our faith has pages upon pages of written material.

The topic question of this thread: Should we know just as much from that period as we have learned from our own books?

Fun, well maybe. True? Hmmmm.....

The Gospel of Thomas feels bogus from the word go.

As is written, "my sheep know my voice, the voice of another they will not hear"

I couldn't hear his voice in that, at all. Which goes to show you, false doctrine isn't just a symptom of today.

When Christ wished to come upon the earth to men, the good Father summoned a mighty power in heaven, which was called Michael, and entrusted Christ to the care thereof. And the power came into the world and it was called Mary, and Christ was in her womb seven months.

Well, now I know where they got that one. I got a nice quote that sums all of this up nicely:

Act 20:28-30
(28) Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.
(29) For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock.
(30) Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.

Off the top I'd say the "Gospel of Thomas, and "Gospel of the Hebrews" qualifies as "Perverse Things".

There were probably as many "Gospel Perverts" then as there are now! :D

This is why I'm against calling our selves "like the early christians". lol

Which also backs my firm belief that the hand of the Lord was in the assembly of the books of the Bible and in bringing it to us.

Reading through these "Other gospels" it is so very clear that what your reading isn't the word of the Lord. It is something false.

Those early "other gospels" may well have been written by people who didn't want to recieve what the Apostles, or the elders ordained by the Apostles, had to preach.

So the went about trying to establish their "own" church, which as we can see ended with Catholicism. 100 AD heresy became 325 AD accepted and state sanctioned religion.

AMEN!! The more people would realize this, the more souls we'd take with us, to be with JESUS, forever & ever, AMEN!

Ysan, some of those books of questionable credibility.

The Didache, for example, that is quoted here as being
from the period 50-120 AD, has no earlier manuscript than
the 9th century!!!

That would explain why it says to baptize in the trinity.

As in any age, a lot gets said, but not all of it is true. What
is important is that it agree with the prophets, and the
apostles. They all spoke the same thing.

In other words, the final authority should always be what is written in the Bible, then as we receive that knowledge, then in turn receiving the understanding of what God is saying there, then the godly wisdom to know what to do with it after we do receive the other two.

Which requires us also to understand that we do see thru a glass darkly yet too, and therefore may not have it all together even yet, even though sometimes we think we do.

I have to admit, when I was very young, I was really smart. But it seems the older I get the dumber I get too. :goof: But amazingly I have much more peace now than I did then. :spin: Could someone please tell me what happened to me?
