"People who do not know the Lord ask why in the world we waste our lives as missionaries. They forget that they too are expending their lives…and when the bubble has burst, they will have nothing of eternal significance to show for the years they have wasted."-- Nate Saint, missionary martyr

Praise the Lord! It is with a grateful heart for all that the Lord has done that I write to you today. It is hard to imagine how some manage to live without the precious hand of God in their lives. Without His guidance, without His touch, I know that my life would be vain and all of the work that we busy ourselves with daily would be of no avail. I thank God for great mercy and His wonderful truth that He as allowed me to come know. What a privilege!

God is continuing to work in Northeast Brazil. I thank God for the health and the opportunity to be able to have returned in August. I realize more than ever that it is by God’s strength and by His hand that I am in this place. As I travel to different cities and villages in the country of Brazil. I am reminded of God’s command to go into the entire world and preach the gospel. If the gospel is hid, it is hid to those who are lost. As I see crosses, idol statues, candles burning at funeral wakes, and spiritist symbols, they remind me of the great religious darkness that covers the land of Brazil. In Matt. 4:16, it says, "The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up." I cannot help but think that the Lord has sent us here as missionaries to shine the light of His Word into a land of spiritual ignorance and sinful darkness.

Pray for me as I have an opportunity to travel to the city of São Miguel to help in the church there. We recently traveled there to ordain a minister, pastor over the small church that is in that area. This pastor has asked me to come about once a month to help with the services there. Please bind together in prayer with us as we ask the Lord to supply means to purchase a dependable vehicle. Traveling to São Miguel will consist of me going by bus to the bus station downtown and then taking another bus about an hour’s trip to the city. The busses are not always dependable and can be very dangerous. In a car, more people would be able to travel with me and we would be able to be of a greater help. It would also open other ministry opportunities. Much time is spent at bus stops waiting; this time could be better spent reaching for souls. I know that there are many of you who already help on a consistent basis and without this faithful help, the work would without doubt be hindered. I ask those of you who possibly could and feel led of the Lord, to give, as you are able to this cause. A reliable, used car here in Brazil, would cost me about $800 for a down payment and monthly payments of about $100 dollars. If there would be any who could pledge as little as $10/month, it would be a blessing for the work here. Please pray about this need and ask the Lord if He would have you to give to this cause.

The work in Tabuleiro continues steadily on, since the rains have stopped flooding the church. Each Friday, we spend several hours going door-to-door inviting others to the services. Our regular services are on Tuesday and Friday nights. The church and I are praying for revival in that village. Please join us with your prayers that God will loose the chains that Satan has over that village. On October 30, we are making a trip to Arapiraca to help Missionary Ryan Thompson dedicate his new headquarters church for that city. Brother Raul Jr and his wife will be coming to preach the services.

On Sunday nights, Sister Lucia and I are working with the adolescents. Since October 12 was children’s day here in Brazil. We planned a special day for the kids. We had Bible games, swimming (thanks to our next-door neighbor), and pie in your face, gift exchange, and various other activities. The children also have been working on a play that they performed this past Sunday. This coming Sunday, Elaine (one of our young people) and I will begin a Sunday school class for the little ones in our village. It is such a pleasure to work with the children, watching them grow physically as well as spiritually. Jonas (right), one of our adolescents has brought to us various "Bible studies" during service. Our young people have been actively helping with evangelism, puppet shows, singing, and even preaching.

On October 16 and 17, we had a bazaar for the church in Tabuleiro, selling used clothing, hand-made crafts, and hotdogs to help raise money to reform the bathroom of the church. God blessed and made it well worth our effort. Our primary purpose in the bazaar was to make more contacts with the neighbors of the church, which was successful as we made many such contacts. We handed out tracts to all participants, inviting them to church. In the afternoon, we had our first puppet show using our new puppet stand made out of PVC piping. We invited all the children who lived close by the church; the Lord blessed us with over 25 children, none of which was evangelical. The children laughed as the puppets told Bible stories and sang songs of Jesus love for them. Thank you, Sister Melissa Foster for your help in designing the plans for the puppet stand and Brother Bair’s church in Niles, Michigan for the puppets that were donated. Sunday night, we repeated our performance for the church members. Continue to pray for this ministry to the children that we might reach their souls. We desire to use the puppet ministry in many of our churches for various events to reach the children in these villages. We are new at the puppet ministry; if any would have any suggestions or perhaps some simple skits with puppets that could be translated into Portuguese, please write to me. I am also looking for some simple Sunday School Curriculum that could be easily translated into Portuguese for kids ages 2-7. It would be greatly appreciated.

God often answers our prayers when we least expect Him to. I was working in my office translating One God and Jesus Name Baptism tracts for our ministers’ use and Bible Study tools. After finishing two of them, Brother Alvear took them to our Bible College class on Monday night to be given to the ministers. We had a Trinitarian couple visiting the class that week. As one of our church members read the tracts aloud, the couple saw their need to be baptized in Jesus name, which we promptly baptized the next week.

We all desire to see results of our labors as we work for the Lord. Sometimes they are not so forthcoming and other times it seems the windows of heaven have been opened. Either way we know that our labor is not in vain when we are working for the Lord. One plants, another waters, but God gives us the increase. So as we are planting and watering the Word of the Lord, let’s keep our eyes focused on our Master and Leader, Jesus Christ “…who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame…” (Heb.12:2) Expecting the fruits of our labors which may be revealed while we live or perhaps only in eternity, let us go forth weeping bearing precious seed knowing that we will “…doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing [our] sheaves with [us]” (Psalms 126:6).

I have tried to keep things in my own hands, and I have lost them all. But what I have given into God's hands, that I still possess.” --Martin Luther

The last of the Norris' is Bro Jefferies Norris.
Off Hand I can’t remember which city.

His father Bro. Robert Norris was there for about 25 or more years.
He was there with 3 of his children. Judy – Mark – Jeffery.
Judy has already passed on to be with the Lord.
Mark has had to return home due to a illness that has already taken his sister Judy.
And Jeff is still there with his Brazilian wife and family.

The family has labored for well over a total of 35 or more years in the country of Brazil.

Bro. Bennie & Sister De Merchant has also been there for many years of their lives…
His Bible School has Graduated Thousands if I remember right.

All of these Men & Sister DeMerchant were a product of the Apostolic Bible Institute.

Sis. Amy,
Do you live on site with the Alvear family?

Yes sir, I certainly do. I have been helping with the work here since 2001, six months in Brazil, six months in the States. Until I finally got my permanent visa in September of 2003 which allows me to stay full time. I consider the Alvear's like parents. They are a wonderful example for young missionaries, learning how to reach others.

FOR THOSE WHO DO NOT KNOW;

I came to Brazil 37 years ago as a young (very young) single girl with a call to be a missionary. I suffered many things...After I married Brother Alvear we agreed to always open our home to young single missionaries and give them a hand...
Just a glimpse of some of the things that are happening you can see through Sister Amy's letter. She is a very talented young girl and holds both the young and old spell bound by her puppet shows...that have the purpose of reaching people on different levels. (I will let her letter speak for her)
Another young man and his wife that work with us is Brother Ryan Thompson. Several years ago he came with his folks to visit Brazil as his dad was preaching a youth congress for us. He was unsaved and his goal in life was to become a professional basketball player. He had never repented, been baptized or anything like that...but somewhere on his trip God got a hook in his jaw and one day his mom called me from the states (Ryan was 17) saying Ryan wanted to come back and visit Brazil...she told me the reasons why he should not come back...he needed to finish school, did not show any interest in God...I said Sister Thompson if I had a boy without the Holy Ghost and he wanted to come back for a visit to the mission field I would forget about school and anything and send him...Bless his sweet mom and dad...they did just that. He came back and in no time recieved the Holy Ghost, was baptized...went back to the states came back again started dating my daughter in law's sister...marrried and today is a wonderful young missionary and just this past weekend Brother Alvear dedicated a BEAUTIFUL church that he built a couple hours drive from our house...
Sister Charity that lived with us for several years and just got married in May is right now in the states doing deputation.
Brother Chad Thomas that came to Brazil was just 16 years old. Came down here for a visit felt called to be a missionary, stayed, went home to raise funds came back married one of our daughters and is now working for God right here with us. In fact he is the breadmaker for our community. He learned to make bread here...up every morning around 3:30 firing up the over to have bread ready to sell at 6:00. He is helping in one of the churches and runs errands constantly for us.
Then our adopted sons are all working in the ministry...They could have just been a number in Statistics of lost street children. Andrew and his wife work in south Brazil as full time missionaries. Helping our oldest son Raul Jr and his wife. Another son Alexander and wife Meire work as music ministers in Raul Jr's main church in south Brazil
Another son Arlei and wife Gilene work as our right arm here in Maceio. They also pastor a church in a village here and over see a couple other ones.
Another son Michael and his wife pastor the Santos Dumont church and drive the church bus for our headquarters church and help in the breadstore. Another son Ednei and his wife are our general helpers here. He is our drumplayer and helps in the Clima Bom church. Our youngest son Dirlei is our minister of music at the headquarters church and helps me on my office work. Many other young men and women today are marching throughout Brazil lifting up the blood stained banner...
There is work for everybody. Brother Alvear helps fit each one in their place. We have lots of young pastors all over Brazil. God has given us a special love and patience to work with young people.
We are especially helping several young couples at this present moment to find their place in Christ. Brother Alvear teaches a lot about the priest of the home to our young married couples and this helps very much. In fact next Saturday we are having a special get together at one of the churches for young married couples...
Many of these young couple live on hardly no support. They make daily great sacrifices for the work of God.
We encourage you to come over and visit us here in Brazil. May God bless all those that pray and help the missionaries for without our monthly supporters our hands would be tied.
Pray for all these young people and many more not mentioned that work day and night in the harvest fields of the Lord. Sister Alvear

He was there establishing his work maybe 45 to 50 years or so ago - - Do you even know of him.
He was a wonderful man.

Sister Alvear, Thank you for the above post! We love you and your family so much! I can't wait until Bro. M. Alvear comes back to the states, also tell him that Bro. Najera says hello! Pray that all goes well and I'll be making the trip next year with Pastor and others from our Church as well.
Oh my, I forgot about the hard drive, do you still need it? I am sooooo sorry Sister. I apologize. Please let me know.

Sis. Amy tell Bro. M. Alvear I'll not only treat him to another Coke Float but I'll introduce him to a "Purple Cow!" Unless of course you beat me to it!

So many questions I have. Please ask Bro. Michael to email me! Better yet, do you have his email address? He gave it to me but I misplaced it.

I want to support the work in Brazil. My son is "God called" to brazil. I had a dream one night that we were on our way down south my husband and myself traveling (in my dream). I woke up the next day and I remembered the indigenous women that I had seen in my dream and on the way down we prayed a woman through to the Holy Ghost encountered some spiritual battles and met with a lady at a village and asked her where was Texas? I remember her telling me way above me or something to that effect. The next day I awoke like the dream just ended and told my husband we weren't sure if it was Brazil or Chile in my dream we knew it was by the coast because I remember seeing the coast. I have 5 children and my husband and I told the whole family. The kids said mom who is called to Brazil? Is it you and dad or would it be one of us? I said I don't know....The next day we go to service my pastor without even knowing my dream pulled my then 10 yr old son who is a fireball out of the pew and said for instance its not the parents but this little boy is going to preach to tens of thousands of thousands of people in Brazil South America!!!!!!! He never even knew the dream or that we were waiting to hear from God who was going to Brazil. My whole family was praising God for it! We do hear from God thats a definite many of times. So, I want to support the work in Brazil as my family is able financially...I will write down the address and praise God for those who are focused on reaching out to the lost I love this old time religion!!! Bye the way take a look at the city of Coeur d'alene isn't it most beautiful....Furthermore, we do hope that my son can attend ABI as well I was just looking at their site yesterday. Bro Stoneking attended that college as well!

Sister Estrada,

I am so glad that the Lord still speaks to us today! It is good to hear of the Lord's wonderful way of calling your son to the missionary work. I was just a little 5-year old girl when the Lord first spoke to me about being a missionary. The Lord called to me about a year after I received the Holy Ghost. I saw myself in a circle, sitting on the ground with several children brown and black skinned teaching them of the Lord's love and singing with them. Now I am very involved in the children's ministry here. God is very faithful when He calls. There were years when I thought the doors would never open. But at the right time, the Lord moved and made it possible.
He opened the door so wide, it clearly showed me the way in which to walk.

Brazil is beautiful in many ways, if you can overlook much of the poverty in the cities, the countryside and the oceanside is a great display of the Lord's creation. Thank you for your burden to support the work here in Brazil financially. The Lord blesses those who gives and who knows if you are sewing the seeds for financial blessing for your son as he comes to the field. God definitely blesses those who give--I have seen it happen several times.

God bless,
Sister Amy

The Apostolic Bible Institute (ABI) has produced more people to the foreign mission field that any other Bible Collage in the US.
ABI was instrumental in Men & Women going and opening works in Brazil for well over 55 years.

And Prayerfully if his schedule doesn’t change Bro. Lee Stoneking will be back here again this year to do some Preaching & Teaching.

We are busy working full speed ahead all over Brazil. I am not so active in the "go" as I once was but I keep busy helping that overs who have more strength and helth than I do can go.
Yesterday, with the help of my credit card I was able to give a downpayment to a preacher to help him buy a computer so that more Bible studies can get typed and out into the hands of Brazilians.
So everymonth for one year I have another computer payment to make but God always makes a way when things are for His work.

Keep praying for us great things are happening here. Many new people are coming to the Lord. Several new areas are calling for someone to come to them...
I would like to ask all to keep praying for my mother. She is still bedfast because of the stroke, her weight, her age, and bedsores but she is conscience. Thanks to those that have sent things to help us on her care and doctor bills.
May Jesus bless you all. Sister Alvear

December 12, 2004,

“…this one thing I do…reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark…” (Phil. 3:3,14).

To my Friends,

I wanted to write and let you know how the Lord is working in Brazil. God has answered prayers and has given me some young people who have a desire to reach souls for the Lord working in the Sunday School and puppet ministry. My desire is to see a thriving Sunday School in each village, children learning the love of the Lord and coming to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. We are in need of materials to aid these young teachers to teach children effectively in the Word of God. Children’s Bibles, coloring pages, crayons, colored pencils, paper, cd players, children’s music cds, plastic tables and chairs, along with bus fares and gas for any vehicle we may be able to use. So, I am asking you, my brothers and sisters, to take a part in seeing these children find the Lord. I am busily working on training these young people (me learning at the same time too!) to effectively reach the children in their villages, creating and translating lesson plans, puppet skits, and any other possible tool. Unfortunately, many times, a lack of finances keeps the work from moving forward as it could and in this I ask for your participation. God does not send everyone to leave their natural country to fly to another land, with another language, another people to share the Gospel, but all can have a part in this ministry.

In São Miguel, a backslider came back to the Lord while the altar was filled with those praying and seeking for the Holy Ghost. We went to Arapiraca for the dedication of Brother Ryan Thompson’s headquarter church. God has blessed him with a beautiful place to preach the Gospel to the lost in the 2nd largest city in Maceió. Several trips have been made to the city of Maribondo where there is a group of faithful members serving the Lord.

Although there is much construction still needing to be done at the church of Tabuleiro, much has been done to transfer the once car garage into a house of worship to the true, living God. The Lord is blessing us with His sweet presence in the midst of the services. Several visitors have come through the doors. For a month, we had teams of young people helping with inviting people to the services. We are often stopped on the street and asked for prayer.

As the year 2004 is ending, it is a time to reflect on the victories and the failures of the past year, to rejoice in the victories and learn from our failures. I can say that one more year, the Lord has been faithful. This month marks 3 years of my time in Northeast Brazil. I have come to love the people, their quirks, and their openness to the Word of God. Only the Lord knows what the year 2005 holds for us. I only know that when the Lord comes, I want to be found working in the harvest field. I want to say many thanks to those who faithfully pray for the work here in Northeast Brazil. Please continue to pray for Sister Agnes Taylor, Sister Alvear’s mother who had a stroke here 8 months ago. Pray for the Alvears and their team of workers who have come to help them in Northeast Brazil, which I am happy to say that the Lord has made me a part of this group.

God bless all in the close of 2004,

Sister Amy
