heres a neat fact:
The first Mother's Day observance was a church service honoring Mrs. Anna Reese Jarvis, held at Anna Jarvis's request in Grafton, West Virginia, and in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on May 10, 1908.

Amen a christian holiday celebrating moms worldwide Amen!

Our church honor all the mothers by giving them each a cousage and having the young people and the sunday school department put on something of their choose. Before the young people sing, they normally recite Proverbs 30 vs 10-31..........

Sister Cooper, I hope you don't mind me going off topic a little bit, but I believe this e-mail is very beautiful and thoughtful. It honors mothers and woman. I had originally posted this message in the open cafe under the thread "A few good e-mails". I am posting it here in hope that all the sisters will have a chance or take the chance to read it because it is beautiful. I had originally wanted to start a new thread but I notice that I am not allowed so here goes....................

A Strong Woman vs A Woman Of Strength

A strong woman works out every day to keep her body in shape ...

but a woman of strength kneels in prayer to keep her soul in shape...

A strong woman isn't afraid of anything ...

but a woman of strength shows courage in the midst of her fear...

A strong woman won't let anyone get the best of her ...

but a woman of strength gives the best of her to everyone...

A strong woman makes mistakes and avoids the same in the future...

a woman of strength realizes life's mistakes can also be God's blessings and capitalizes on them...

A strong woman walks sure footedly ...

but a woman of strength knows God will catch her when she falls...

A strong woman wears the look of confidence on her face ...

but a woman of strength wears grace...

A strong woman has faith that she is strong enough for the journey ...

but a woman of strength has faith that it is in the journey that she will become strong...

We sisters were handed a copy of this at last years semi-conference themed 'the garden of gethsemane'...and it was a spritual exercise thing, we were to pair up with a partner, another sister..one of us along with our leader speaker would say the worldly portion...the partner would say the 'christian' version... it was so-o neat!!
Actually there is even more to it...I came home and read it over the phone to my mom..she scarcely paid attention, but oh well, I thought it was so inspiring! I'll look for it and post the rest if I find it, thanx for the reminder, Goodshepard! I really like this.

Thanks for sharing this, Sis. Sheperd!

SO true, so true....

The only special mother's day services I can recall was where the mothers of the church were honored in song and a brief biography and acknowledgment was recited in church. Then every mother was given a rose.

Love, Sis. Wenona

I do not know, exactly where it came from. I first heard it in COGIC, it is used mostly in predominantly black congegrations. Even in Apostolic realms. They are the elderly women of the church, the mothers of the pastors, founders who are still living, the older women teaching the younger, interceding on their behalf.

I love sitting at the feet of elderly women and just listening to them. I used to do so with my grandmother. That is how I learned of this most precious truth.

But anyway...

that is what is meant by mothers of the church. I call Sis. Alvear 'mother' in that she embodies so much wisdom, experience and knowledge. Would love to just sit at her feet and listen to her.

In a few years, maybe 30 or so, someone besides your biological children, your spiritual children, can call you the mother of the church!:)

Love ya,
Sis. Wenona

Oh my! That term 'mother of the church' sounds so-o full of self-pride. or even idolatory, akin to what Catholics call MARY., any association with that causes me to run away in the other direction!

Maybe if used to refer to an elderly wise old woman in the church congregation who seems the motherly type that any/everyone would love to consider like their own mother, that might be okay, I guess, but if one has one's own mother alive, to call any other woman mother, would be disrespectful and rude.
I have heard of one branch of apostolicism call a certain individual the church mother, but hopefully, that is a term of endearment or respect only, for that particular congregation.

Well I have heard the term mother of the church before and
idolatry never entered my mind.I understand that is african
countries in the apostolic churches there it is quite common
for the mother of the church to sit in a special place of recognition designated by the pastor.lv sis.c

I do not believe it is meant to place any form of worship or anything on the 'mother' of the church.

It is simply a term of endearment and respect.

You're right, Sis. Cooper, in a couple of churches I have gone to there are designated seats for the mother(s) of the church.

I never looked upon this custom as idolatrous in that I hold those who are elderly (women) in such high esteem. I count it a privilege and an honor to sit and listen at the feet of a godly elderly woman of God with years of wisdom and experience up under her belt.

It is not like these women go around demanding this honor, it is bestowed upon them by leadership. For their faithfulness, their dedication and their hard work. Give honor to whom honor is due...

What does the Word say?

The older women ought to teach the younger....not enough of that in the church today....

Sis. Cooper, how did the Mother Day svc go today?

Sis.Wenona,
It went wonderful and we honored Sis.Hazel as the elder mother
of the church. And since she had knee surgery last year Bro.Cooper has her one of the office chairs to sit in.So I guess
you can say she has a special chair....lol...I ended up getting some
very nice notepads with footprints in the sand on them and bought everyone carnations at Walmart.I read the poem written
by Erma Bombeck about the conversation between God and the Angel about him making mothers. We all love it.Pastor preached
actually a message to the children..us...not about the mothers but about how following motherly advice can only profit us.
And how not following motherly advice can cause us much woe.
So after service and a nice luncheon at Golden Wok with my
family in my nice new suit Brother is paying for.Plus he bought me
a really pretty aniversary clock from the girls.I proceeded to get out old clothes and pick blackberries for my 83 year old dad.He was just blessed and we sat and ate them together. Then back to
church and out to dinner and here I am.Fat,happy and blessed.

That's nice...

I miss picking blackberries. My dad used to have a tree in the backyard and would make dumpling out of them.

MMMMMM!

Wow, 83 years old, uh? That is a blessing.

The high point of my day was receiving a call from my dad. I hate to admit that b/c of no money or gas I did not even go to church yesterday. Plus, I was not feeling myself. But still claiming the blessings of God, ya know!

Happy belated Mother's Day, Sis.!

1 Timothy 5:1-2

1 Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren;

2 The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity.

Hi there Tufluv, I know this is an ole thread but, I'd like to know the rest of this story that you were talking about with the partner thing. Let me know if you ever found it. Mothers day will be here before we know it and Ladies Meetings could use it too. I'm always ready to hear good ideas that will make our services and meetings better. So, anyother ideas for Mothers Day services or Ladies meetings anyone????

AMEN!

You know that Mother's Day will be here before we know it. Do you all have any ideas of what you'll be doing in your churches for this special day? Let's hear some feed back. I'm the Ladies Leader at our church and must come up with something every year. We all want something different each year so it's kept interesting. How about Father's Day too? That's always a hard one. Let's put our thinking caps on and lets hear some ideas.

Our Pastor's wife makes little presents for all the mothers in our church. Last year she gave us a little decorative spoon and a tea bag in a little fabric bag. It is always something small that she makes up for the mothers. The pastor usually says something about mothers and a couple of the Sunday School classes come in sometimes and say poems. That is about all we do...........The sermon always depends upon the leading of the Lord. It may or may not have anything to do about Mothers.

Right now, I'm trying to put it together. So far, I have a song. I found it on line. It's not a christian song but, it's about a mother and all she does for her children and family. Very nice. I'm going to try that and a small gift of some sort. I'll be going to the Ladies Conference and maybe PPH will have a small token of some kind. Maybe a little game, like the mother with the most buttons on her dress, mother with the youngest or oldest child, something along those lines. I'm open for more ideas, so don't hold back now.:goof: Let's see what these brillant minds can come up with.

I say call all the mothers up to the platform and have them sing together.Remember when long ago the pastors would call everyone up on the platform and have a singing? (I did this at Thursday night church)Boy did I get participation.I found out some folks can sing and are hiding it.lv sis.c
