View Full Version : When was JESUS crucified?

The Jewish day ended at sundown and a new day started. In Mark we have Him killed at about nine am, which would have been the day of the Passover. However, in John He is killed on the day before the Passover, the day the Passover Lamb would normally be “prepared” for Passover. So, which is it? The day before, or the day of?

MARK:
12And the first day of unleavened bread, when they killed the passover, his disciples said unto him, Where wilt thou that we go and prepare that thou mayest eat the passover? 13And he sendeth forth two of his disciples, and saith unto them, Go ye into the city, and there shall meet you a man bearing a pitcher of water: follow him. 14And wheresoever he shall go in, say ye to the goodman of the house, The Master saith, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples? 15And he will show you a large upper room furnished and prepared: there make ready for us. 16And his disciples went forth, and came into the city, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover. 17And in the evening he cometh with the twelve. 18And as they sat and did eat,

Sleep on now, and take your rest: it is enough, the hour is come; behold, the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

And straightway in the morning the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council, and bound Jesus, and carried him away, and delivered him to Pilate.

And so Pilate, willing to content the people, released Barabbas unto them, and delivered Jesus, when he had scourged him, to be crucified. 16

JOHN:
12And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar’s friend: whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar. 13When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha. 14And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King! 15But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.
16Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away. 17And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha: 18Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst.

I think IHS (In His Service) could answer this.

Didn't you speak of this on another thread Bro. Tim?

Hello J,
Actually, I have posted this on other Bible boards, but not on the Good News Cafe. I'm a college student and I'm taking a New Testament class this term. The class is being taught from a historical perspective. Many of the students are upset over the information which has been presented, but no one seems to be able to refute it. I would appreciate any comments you all might have because as it stands right now, there appears to be a rather large contridiction within the gospels.
I have other questions along this line that I would like to post.

I do not have your answer at this moment, but I am obliged to remind you; any inconsistancies that may appear to be in the bible are so, merely because man is inconsistant. Our God is perfect.

His Name is Jesus!

This is the third such type of question I have read in the forum this week. Questions that can result in questionable answers. I can see that these questions are offered by someone who is/are knowledgeable, but are not truly seeking the types of answers that conduce to salvation. So I have to ask, WHAT is it that is really being sought?
Rule #5: Let every doctrine be established by context, intention, and/or by the mouth of two witnesses or three.
Those questions are too deep for me; but we could certainly come to the an agreement on the fundamental issues. What is the Gospel you proclaim?
So, John_Ignatius, what is your intention? If it is to seek the TRUE Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ, you have come to the right place. Is your heart open to the Gospel?

Now it was the day of the Preparation of the Passover, and it was about 12:00 noon. (John 19:14). Jesus is immediately sent off to be crucified (John 19:16). In John 18:28, we see that the Jewish leaders didn’t want to become ritually defiled by entering Pilate’s place of residence and thereby prevent them from eating the Passover meal. In John’s account, Jesus does not prepare and eat a Passover meal because, evidentially, he is already crucified.
In Mark’s gospel, Jesus is killed the following morning on Passover day, after celebrating the Passover meal, praying in the garden afterwards that night and then being approached for arrest while the disciples slept.
John’s gospel is the only one to refer to Jesus as the “lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world”. Since the lamb was prepared before the Passover, it seems that the writer of John NEEDED Jesus to die before the Passover.
As you know, the writers of the synoptic gospels collaborated. That is Luke and Matthew borrowing from Mark and “Q”, along with each of their own sources, “M” and “L”. With the story being passed down by word of mouth for 65 years before being recorded, it seems likely that it could have change in order to meet the theology of the day. What do you think?

Hello Bro Villa,
I just saw your post. As I said, I'm a student. I'm in a New Testament class. It is not my major. I'm Comp Sci, but I had to take a humanities class. I'm looking for a different point of view than the one I've been presented in class. Am I to take the information in this class for the truth, or do you have other information?

Hi Bro Villa, after re-reading your post, I felt like I needed to say that I have only posted as JOHN_IGNATIUS and that is the only posts I have followed. I'm not aware of the other posts you spoke of. Please check my IP. I'm sincere in these questions. thanks.
