After I posted the following on another thread I decided it would make a really good one.
Wow Speaking of names. My older daughter is named after her dad.Stephanie Alania. Her Dad is Stephen Allan. Her name means crowned beautiful and she honestly is blessed with that name.
Her head of hair is the most beautiful thing you ever saw.And she is very sweet and gracious.Extremely ladylike.
My younger daughter was named when I was going through a very hard time in life. Her name is Ashleigh Noelle.I did not realize it until later but her name Ashleigh means from the ashen meadow. And during this time in my life I was in a state of mourning and weeping and a deep valley.Noelle is the french name for Christmas.I have always loved this name when I've heard it spoken because it sounds so french even when spoken in english. That year I was given joy in the valley and rose out of the ashen meadow in the month of December.Which is her birth month. The Lord turned my weeping into laughter and celebration.

In the bible names were given for children according to Gods purpose for them.In some cases the mother named them
one thing and the Father felt to name them different. And they ended up fullfilling a promise.
I think of Issac named Laugher
and Judah named praise.
A name is very important.
I wonder sometimes how people can name their children meaningless names.lv sis.c

I don't know how they do Sis C. Your daughter's names are beautiful. When I picked the names of my girls, it really meant a lot to me. I found that I evidently have strong roots in my family ties.
I wanted a boy, and I had picked out the name of Andrew David. My husbands grandfather was named David Andrew, and his uncle was named David.
I never did have my boy, but did have a big beautiful girl. My oldest daughter is named Elaine Marie, Elaine is after a close family friend who is a Pastor's wife in Texas. Marie is my Grandmother's name, and my sister Lyn's middle name.
When I had my second, I didn't know what to name her exactly. I wanted to name her Elisabeth, but knew if I did she would be teased being named Elisabeth Taylor :) I was going to name her that anyway until I saw her. When I took one look at her, it was evident that she was a carbon copy of my Mom, so she became Jacqueline (Mom's name) Elisabeth. My name is derived from Elisabeth, which is also the way the bible spells the Mother of John the baptist.
When I became pregnant again, was I ever upset, I cried, I had my hands full, didn't need another one so soon. I named her after my sister Rebecca, but I spelled it the bible way, and her name is Rebekah Joy. Joy is my 3 nieces middle names. My niece Erica Joy named all of her girls with Joy as a middle name too. I love the name Joy!
I used a blend of family names, and biblical names. Names are forever and I wanted to make sure they could live with them and not hate me for them! :)

I love names! I like unusual, but pronouncable names. LOL
I love the name Aaliyah, but I don't want the poor child to grow up like I did. I have had to pronounce or spell my name (or gotten weird looks from people about it) just about every day for as long as I was old enough to remember. I love my name. Jamele is pronounced Juh-meel. But it sure has been a hassle having such a unique name.
Aaliyah could be spelled in less unique ways...Aleah, Alia...Aleigha, but then it just wouldn't be the same.
Right now, about the only girl names my husband and I both like are Brooke Anna (my name is Anna Jamele...my mom's middle name is Anne, and her mom's is too), and Brianna Rain. I can't decide how I would spell Rain though. Maybe Rayne, Raine, Reighn, Raen...not sure yet.
For a boy, my husband has his mind set on naming the first boy Ayden Josiah. That is a lovely name. But we live in AL, so he would be Ayd'n Jo-zyer. Sad but true. I think Michael would be nice, since that my hubby's middle name. But there is no changing it. He has always wanted to name his boy Ayden Josiah, and since it means a lot to him, I won't argue.
I just love baby names. I could go on listing ones that I love, and seeing all the ones that y'all love. But I guess I should get back to work...duty calls!;)

I loved picking out the names for our children. I got to name the girls and the husband got to name the boy. That's fair :) Our oldest daughter is Amanda Leigh, she was very special for she was born on Christmas day:banana: Our second daughter is Stephanie Renee. Our son is a name that you don't hear very often and it's Dean Newton Jr. We are now working on our grandchildren. Jacob Ryan and Philip Ethan. I would have had the perfect catholic name if I had been catholic and even more funny is when you put the Sister to the rest of my name Sister Mary Katherine:laugh: I go by Kathy. I always call the child by the first name that we gave them for it is soooooo confusing if you use the 2nd name. As they age they have to keep explaining I go by my middle name. I don't like confusion, but, I've had to deal with this now for 47yrs. and will til I die:( So, those out there that are planning on having kids remember what I just said:beammeup:

It's really been fun reading these posts. It reminded me of when the Lord blessed us with our son and gave us his name.
I have 3 children and their names are simple ones. My oldest daughter I had when I was 16 yrs old. We could not agree on a many names but finally did on Stacy Ann. I wanted to spell it Stacey but he didn't! She has her own family now and is 28 with two children. She named her daughter Ciera Michele after me!:) My name is Michele Lee. She named her son Bailey Scott after her dad, Douglas Scott. I feel so honored that she chose to do this!
My second child I had when i was 21, we named her Jaime Lyn. We meant to use both names together all the time but it didn't happen but she likes it said that way. She is 22 and starting her family. They named their daughter Jasmine Raqual.
My son is the only child we had after being saved. I was totally surprised when I found out i was pregnaunt with him. I was upset at first because i was 28 and not in the baby mind at all!!! But the Lord knew what He was doing! I just came out of a trial and was being remolded in areas and God was merciful. We had always wanted a boy so bad but I had decided it wasn't meant to be. When I found out I was pregnaunt I knew in my heart it was a blessing from God and it was a boy. We had decided years before if had ever had a boy we would of named him Jonathan Duane after our fathers. His dad's name John Paul, my dad's name William Duane. So the name was decided several years before even though I thought I would never get to use it. I remember while I was pregnaunt someone asked me the names i had picked out and when I said the name Jonathan Duane there was such a anointing I felt when I said it that I knew it was a boy and that God wanted me to name him that. The person that asked me felt it also, i seen it on their face and they smiled and said what a beautiful name. After this i sat down and looked up the name because then knew it was from God. Jonathan means "God is Gracious" I sat there and wept.
When he was born my husband was holding him immediatley after delivery and I looked up and saw big tears in his eyes as he gazed at our son. He is 16 now and is such a blessing to us. I don't know what I would do if I hadn't had him as right now with my girls having started their own families. His dad has been really sick these past 6 months and Jonathan is the sunshine that brightens every day!!! Yes 16 yr olds can be trying doing some of the things 16 yr olds would do but he is such a good kid with a sweet heart. He's got such a good trait in him that I love and that is he sees no bad or any negative in anybody and is friends with everybody.
All my children love the Lord and serve Him and I'm so thankful for that!

Jamele is pronounced Juh-meel.
That was one of my guesses. My other first guess was Ja-mel...kinda like James and Mel blended together.
The name we have picked out for a daughter is Rebekah Marie -- my husband's idea. I am okay with it. He likes the names Rebekah and Rachel. I think Rebekah is a pretty name. I told him we'll never have a Rachel because I grew up with an Aunt Rachel who is a looney tune. Besides, our niece's name is Rachel. He chose Marie for the middle name because it's my middle name. I relented because of the reason he choose it, though it screams out "CATHOLIC!" imo.
BTW, I have a cousin named Rainey (I think that's how it's spelled). It's pronounced Rain-e.
For a boy, my husband has his mind set on naming the first boy Ayden Josiah. That is a lovely name. But we live in AL, so he would be Ayd'n Jo-zyer. Sad but true. I think Michael would be nice, since that my hubby's middle name. But there is no changing it. He has always wanted to name his boy Ayden Josiah, and since it means a lot to him, I won't argue..
My son's name is James (the reason for my original thought on the pronunciation of your name). His middle name is Harlan. James, as you probably know already, means supplanter. Harlan means "from the army". I picked out the name James back when I was 13 (6 years before he was around) when I was listening to a "B" side from a one hit wonder called Fiona (not Fiona Apple). The name of the song was James. I still have that 45. Harlan didn't come till I was pregnant with him and was searching for names like crazy. I was watching Stephen King's Golden Years on tv and the main character's name was Harlan. I liked it and thought it sounded good with James.
James also happens to be a family name. I didn't realize that at the time. My Uncle Jimmy's (on my mom's side) real name is James. I also have an uncle named James on my dad's side that I've never met.
Had he been a girl his name would have been Madeline. My grandmother hated that name. Said it was a horrible name for a baby. I don't think someone with the name Ursula should be talking about bad names for babies. lol
Josiah is also the name I picked for a son, should I have another. I have a thing with "J" names for boys. I am not sure what middle name I'd like with it though since I haven't thought that out. Hubby doesn't like Josiah too much, but I told him that if he gets to pick the girl names, I get to pick the boy names. LOL

I have a 1/2 sister named Amanda Raye. Her twin's name is Melissa Leigh. I think that's how their names go. Been a long time since I had to remember their middle names, let alone their first. I haven't seen them in a few years.

I was reading some magazine at my parents' house, and there was an article in there about that young singer that was killed in a plane crash. Her name was Aaliyah. I thought it looked and sounded so beautiful. I'm sure I had probably heard the name before, but it just really jumped out at me that time.
I could use Aleigha, because my best friend's name is Jennifer Leigh. We have always said we wanted to name our girls after each other. Alia is pretty too, and more simple for children to spell. lol Aleah or Alea are both nice. I think it would come down to Aleigha or Alia though. Evan Aleea is pretty. So many ways to do it.
My husband is not crazy about the name. He says, "it's alright". He loves the name Brooke, and Brianna is his 2nd choice. I love both of those too.
We could always just use Anna, since that is my first name. But I don't want "common" names for my children. The name Anna is beautiful and has a beautiful meaning, but it's not very unique.
I even think Michaela would be a pretty girl's name, my hubby is Shawn Michael. But he doesn't like that.
A name is so important! I just want to be sure we pick something very beautiful, with an important meaning...and it is easy to spell and pronounce.
I know what y'all mean about the middle name thing! I do wish my parents would have named me Jamele Anna sometimes. It is so confusing to go by your middle name...and even worse just after you marry! When I go to the Dr. or pay bills, or whatever, I have to say, ok...you might have me as Anna Burleson or Jamele Burleson or Anna Murray or Jamele Murray. So confusing!
And I have been called everything you can imagine! Kitty, your guess was pretty close considering some other peoples' guesses. lol
I've been called Jamell, Jamella, Jamal, Janell, Janeel, Jamayill, Jamie Lee, the list goes on! I have vowed not to do this to my child!

My name is Diedra (pronounced Deedra), and because my mom switched the i and the e around, I have been called lots of weird names too( De-edra, Deardra, Di-dra, etc.). I Let my mom name my oldest daughter who happened to be the first drandaughter and she chose Joni D'Nae. My son is Kevin Jace and believe it or not, I got it out of a phone book! My youngest daughter (Sweet 16:angel: ) is Laura Michele and shares my middle name. Her dad is Lawrence, so we chose Laura as the feminine form.

I have a cousin who named her little girl Dezmyn Unique. The started calling her Dezi, now they call her D.D. (don't ask me why, I have no idea).
If God ever blesses us with children, I love the name Cheyenne Rose. I think it just sounds so pretty. My husbands side of the family has this tradition of naming one boy with the initials J.W. Well, because he got the JW, we have to name a boy with those initials. I don't really like most boy names that begin with W, so I think we have decided on Justin Walker. It is the closest to anything that I like. He definately won't get his father's middle name, Wayne, I hate that name. I love my husband, but I don't like that name. It isn't his fault though, so it is alright. :)
My name is Jessica Renee'. I love my name. I was named after my grandfather who's first name is Jesse. The only problem with that is my grandfather hated his first name. He had a lot of Jesse's in his family, so he didn't go by his first name. Thus, I became Renee'.
Okay, I looked it up and here is the meanings of my names:
JESSICA
Gender: Female
Origin: Hebrew
Meaning: God's Grace
(That is different that what I have seen in the past, but I like it.)
RENEE
Gender: Female
Origin: French
Meaning: Reborn
Oh how I love the meaning of Renee'. How true it is. I have been reborn into the Kingdom of God. Praise the Lord!!!!! It was only through God's grace that I was able to be reborn, so my name suits me just right. :)

Nah...not just yet. According to www.babynames.com (http://www.babynames.com), http://www.babychatter.com/wboy.html, and http://baby-names-etc.com/baby_name_origin_meaning.htm Wayne means wagon maker. The only one that gives him hope is http://www.babycenter.com/babyname/results.jhtml?_DARGS=%2Fbabyname%2Fmeanings.jhtml. 1 and that one still puts him in the seat of a wagon by saying he's a wagoner.

COOL!!
Neat thread!
I've loved reading everyone's posts! :spin:
Just checked that site, and found my name means "daughter of the sea"!!
Wasn't there something recently written on a certain thread, having to do with the sea? Hmmm...must look that up., or perhaps I read it elsewhere.
I looked up my sons names - Matthew (Hebrew origin) "gift of GOD"
Robert (English origin-named after his dad) - "bright fame"- (he'd like that).
George - "tiller of the soil" (???) LOL middle name Richard "powerful rich ruler"
[hmm..so then was he to become RICH by ruling over farmers of his land(s)? - ]; LOL - he's actually an electrician! Missed his calling? NAH! I believe GOD has the REAL purposes for all my sons, in serving HIM!
While looking up meanings of names assigned by "??", is kinda fun - does anyone else here suspect that finding origins of names may be a bit like "devination"?? (like horoscopic, or fortune-telling). I mean, because the meanings tend to lend a person an occupation, or even destiny.
GOD is the only one who knows our beginning from our end. I believe HE has HIS own name for each of us., with HIS own special meaning. I prefer to be called "daughter of KING JESUS"...
NOT - "daughter of the sea"; although a case could be made that since HE is "LIVING Waters", the sea being a huge expanse of DEEP water that contains living organisms, that could also fit me. :D
I do love swimming in DEEP spiritual waters!!!
I was born of it? Truth CAN be stranger than fiction, as they say!

My firstborn, Donovan, got his name years before he was born...
I saw his name on TV and vowed to call my firstborn son Donovan if I ever had a boy. I just thought the name sounded so distinguished! It means Dark skinned warrior. I picture a dark prayer warrior when he grows up!
For my daughter Damaris, well I got her name out of Acts 17:34. She was a follower of Paul. I later found out that the name has Greek and Hispanic origins. Which is funny b/c everyone who sees her thinks she is Hispanic b/c of her light skin!
And for my baby, Dominic, well, it means belonging to God. I wanted this last one to belong to God and I believe He marked the pregnancy with such peace and joy in the midst of the adverse surrounding circumstances, that I concluded that this was the will of God to dedicate my youngest to Him in name, and life....
My name, I later found out, is Indian for First born daughter. I believe Sioux Indian. I have a lot of Indians in my family on my mom's side...
I obviously believe that a name has power. I carefully and prayerfully pick the names of each of my kids, not just for how it sounded with my last name or their father's but the meaning behind it. I believe that what you name a child can follow that child for life. So gotta make it a good one, eh?

bump I liked this thread.
Learning more Greek has helped me to understand more about where my daughters name evolved from.
Stephanie which means crowned beautiful comes from the Stephani
that was put upon the heads of those winning in Greek Games. It also
is the name for the beautiful crown that situates a veil upon womens heads.
I am even happier I named her that.
